And BTW, there is nothing wrong with being an innings builder in tests. It is actually a very good thing.
There's one too many in India. Moreover, the batsmen with a second skll should take more risks and attack more.

Bangladesh CB XI all out for 142. SteamShip leading with 6 wickets, with the others providing good support. A follow-on is a posssibility, given Big Brother's 454. Then there's Sanjib Sanyal, with a relatively rapid 39*, with 7 fours, and also one wicket for 20.

More trouble for BCB XI in the battle of the neighbours, as they are now at 21/4, following on. Alok Kapali may just save them, but it's advantage Big Brother.

Manjurul Islam Rana started hitting the bowlers around with 5 fours, scoring 26 in 28 balls, but was trapped LBW to that man Sanyal again. He's had a bits-and-pieces role here, but he's doing it well.

The deluge of no-balls in Hyderabad continues, as the South Zone bowlers, except Kumble, have 12 no-balls between them. Pathan has 4, whiel Powar has three and Zaheer, two. In contrast, there have just been 7 no-balls in the East Zone bowling figures.

Sanyal's struck form here, getting his third wicket, fourth of the day. BCBXI are at 88/6 and have just lost Kapali for 13, leg-before. I can't say whether it is genuine, since the match is not televised. The next day's papers may have a hint.

Something fishy happening on the CricInfo scores- here's the sequence
  • Pathan- 10/0/48/2
  • Pathan- 12.2/1/52/2
  • Pathan- 12/1/43/2

Predictably, BCBXI is all out for 163.

Balaji follows his previous score of 31 with 21 in 35, faster than a certain wicketkeeper-batsman prospect, who made a run less. Again, a little too slow, and he needs to play more shots, and should have batted above Karthik and Kumble.

While the no-ball counter in the West/South match is still very active (past 35), that of East Zone has stopped at 9 in both innings. SS Paul has not bowled too many, just three in all, while Ranadeb Bose, who only got half as many wickets as Paul, has not overstepped even once, nor has Sanjib Sanyal. Paul has been on the threshold of national selecion and he would definitely be a good choice.

Can't these goofs make up their minds? Not too long ago, I saw 1.4 overs left, and now, there seem to be more than 7 bonus overs!

The pair of Parab and Pathan have won the match for West. Vinay Kumar had a forgettable day as his 10 overs went for 58 runs (could have been 56 if he watched his step) and Parab got to his century in VK's last over, then hit two fours. Pathan sealed it with a big six off the first delivery of Venugopal Rao's next over. Good show.

You can watch the day's play on DD Saptagiri (Telugu), and the coverage has been done entirely by them, so don't expect anything even close to what DD Sport have done. CricInfo's report says that Laxman dropped two catches.

A few observations from the highlights-
  • Dinesh Karthik spent a little too much time in the middle, for too little- 20 runs. He seemed foot-tight.
  • Balaji batted a lot better, though he should have made a big score- but how much is a number 9 supposed to make? He played some clean drives towards the off-side, as well as a god on-drive and a straight shot. He played basic shots, but hit the ball hard, and the only false shot he played was an ugly pull off Powar. He ran very well between wickets.
  • Venugopal threw caution to the wind as he attacked relentlessly, being severe on Agarkar, whose short eliveries he spooned to the boundary.
  • West Zone were very sharp and tough on the field, particularly Powar and Pathan, as their ground fielding and catching was effective. Sachin saved a certain boundary.
  • The South Zone fielders made one mistake too many. They tried to land on the ball with their hands, not the whole body. The latter is dangerous, but more effective, but the South dives were in vain. One fielder even had the ball through his legs!
  • Satyajit Parab plays like a two-cent version of Virendra Sehwag. He flashes hard at just about everything and forces the pace through his hands alone. He does not move his feet, staying rooted at one place. He spoons rising deliveries outside off to the fence and there is a very high deree of risk in his strokeplay. Never made it to the national team becase he was too old and very average on the field, and he usually doesn't run between wickets!
  • Jaffer was more orthodox, though a hook shot didn't come off well.
  • The highlight for West was Irfan Pathan's innings- this is a strike bowler getting over 50 and staying unbeaten. He built a partnership of over 140, at a run-rate over 5 with Parab. He was a little more composed, save a drop by VVS Laxman. His knock included 7 fours and a massive six that won the match, and while some of them were spooned over slips, he looked in control playing the leg-side shots. He was severe on the spinners, as he came down the track and hit some straight shots, including the six.
  • Karthik had a forgettable time behind the stumps, as two wide deliveries went to the boundary.
  • Tough session for the South bowlers, as Balaji struggled to keep a line and length, while Vinay Kumar and Jesuraj were carted all around in Parab's berserk innings.

so i guess ss paul is ahead of balaji among the prospects for the test squad considering how well the former has bowled (batting won't get balaji selected)

another interesting choice now will be between karthik and dhoni ... karthik was considered the choice for tests, but he has clearly been outperformed by dhoni recently, not to mention parthiv patel (anyone know if his glovework has improved?)

sehwag, gambhir, dravid, tendulkar, laxman, ganguly, kaif, yuvraj, dhoni/karthik, kumble, harbhajan, pathan, khan, powar, paul/nehra

Spies must be reading this page. Balaji scored 35 in 60- way too slow, but he's got one foura and a six, so it's not too bad.
Is this an FC or OD game?

Is Balaji a batsman or bowler?

The one who HAS TO SUCCEED with the bat is Irfan Pathan.
He averages 17.97 in FC and 15.78 in List A - why does he have to succeed?

Surely he'd be better served concentrating on his bowling?

well forget who "has" to succeed with the bat, pathan just did that with his matchwinning (along with parab) knock for west zone xi.

And what was he doing so long? Shaping peanuts? He is no great shakes with the ball, so those runs will do him a lot of good.

Maybe a century against North will change that.

Neither Karthik nor Parthiv were good with the gloves, while Dhoni didn't miss too many, despite technical glitches. Except Dhoni, none of them can be picked on their batting.
