It's pretty old fashioned to stack the leg side to the offspinner against a right hander playing well. These days they practice the reverse sweep enought to make their own leg side. It's also going to make putting away anything short completely risk-free, and Root is predominantly a back foot player. Even if they went with the theory, that short midwicket is pretty superflous and I think I'd rather have a proper deep square than a half-arsed one too.

The basic principle of it is not a bad idea though, it encourages him to back away and play against the spin. Pretty good to see a cricketer putting a theory out there for discussion anyway.

He put out an extended 54 min video discussing the field on facebook. I might watch it later. Dunno about its quality but agree that it's really cool to see cricketers discuss theory at length with the wider audience as opposed to go on about intent, character, resilience, momentum etc.

England Men’s IT20 Squad:

Eoin Morgan (Middlesex) (captain), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Sam Billings (Kent), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Sam Curran (Surrey), Tom Curran (Surrey), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Dawid Malan (Yorkshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), Ben Stokes (Durham), Reece Topley (Surrey), Mark Wood (Durham).

Reserves:

Jake Ball (Nottinghamshire), Matt Parkinson (Lancashire).

No Alex Hales again.
Ironic to see Jake Ball in the frame again after recent discussions on CW about him.

Regarding Hales, I read a piece where Smith was saying he may find his way back into the side at some point, but the suggestion was that Morgan isn't at all keen. Apparently Hales was the top batsman in The Big Bash? Obviously I had no idea as I take no interest in other countries' domestic competitions (see also IPL), but it was interesting to read that they take into account all of the domestic franchises nowadays, and quite rightly so.

Exciting squad! I'd be tempted to move Pant/Pandya up a place and find room for Natarajan, but that looks good

Suryakumar Yadav is a gun and really hope he gets some game time

How high IQ is Rory Burns btw?

Sometimes you have to wonder whether cricketers are any smarter than your average rugby player.

Kohli playing 5D chess to ensure rival teams lose their uncapped players and hence affect retention. Pretty sure there will be heavy rotation and all the uncapped ones are given a chance
