It's pretty old fashioned to stack the leg side to the offspinner against a right hander playing well. These days they practice the reverse sweep enought to make their own leg side. It's also going to make putting away anything short completely risk-free, and Root is predominantly a back foot player. Even if they went with the theory, that short midwicket is pretty superflous and I think I'd rather have a proper deep square than a half-arsed one too.
The basic principle of it is not a bad idea though, it encourages him to back away and play against the spin. Pretty good to see a cricketer putting a theory out there for discussion anyway.
