Elgar and Bavuma aside, over the last four years the rest of the batting is much of muchness. There really aren't any stand out young guns or steely vets. Bedingham has the best pedigree from any batting debutant in ages for SA. The blokes on that NZ tour have loads to play for because every position is up for grabs in that top 7 bar Bavuma IMHO.
to be fair if their top order isn't outstanding with supposed best XI it could be they stuck with tried and trusted and didn't try anyone new, might simply be the players coming in to disrespect Tests might put up a fight, after all they aren't like many setups of being 'in' with their bessies, would have to scored 750 runs in 50 innings to be dropped, so have a chance to make their case for retention

experience, or lack of, will cost them. read earlier on the "not disrespecting Tests" beeb article that most capped among them has 15! but like the two games in a row, choose which game to play your best XI in, in football you could decide to field a weakened side and lose the game you 'write off' but still lose the other game with full strength ie strength of side is no guarantee of a result, just increases your chances but chances do what they say on the tin (odds if you prefer)

don't believe sense comes into cricket, sides play almost a set line up or 'balance' even though the 'balance' isn't

can be too much 'faith' in capabilities of middle and lower order batting, England at the World Cup might have had a line up if not Ali, Curran, Woakes, Rashid, Topley then similar in terms of all bar Topley can bat but in ODIs I wouldn't be expecting more than maybe 10-15 runs usual and 20-30 cameo sometimes max

Ali and Curran aren't such good, or even for me remotely good enough, bowlers that the 20-30 runs they might bring balances the bowling which could be 1 or 0 for 50-60 (Ali) or worse, and when batting even if say 240/4 or 5 you want support for any remaining batsman and partnerships which the 10-15 don't really bring, more regular wicket fall

that tail looks painfully long, Maharaj and Rabada can bat but saffers don't seem to have much depth these days, not that the 8-11 should be digging you out of holes when the top order are 34/5, that's a write off, but had it been say 160/5 then that's when a little more depth of batting helps a little - not at the expense of bowling, but how many bowlers are sooooooooooo good you can afford to not take batting into account or stick 3-4 in the side.....?
hmm what do you think of India’s tail?

55 all out, poor. no pitch is so bad you shouldn't be able to muster 100+ , well none that should be deemed fit to play internationals or even 1st class cricket on

Extras was joint 3rd top scorer
only two partnerships of double figures, max 19
only two batsmen in double figures
only one batsman (30) lasted more than 17 balls

some resident berk on the beeb have your say section recently suggested any batsman playing a forward defensive in think it was reference T20 but may have been ODIs should be shot. I don't believe batsmen know what defence is, not proper protect your wicket, see off the new ball and make hay defence

I thought he went to school there and would have qualified on residency? I know his brother was born in Cape Town.
I knew he was born in Northampton, but Wiki 'confirms' he went to school in Harare. I don't think there's any means by which he'd have qualified for SA.

South Africa's batting is a big concern.
They were 95 all out in NZ in 2022, then were also all out for totals around 100 runs in England

Now absolutely wrecked by India

The C team thats touring NZ maybe isnt bad after all, they need to revamp their batting with new guns

I mean, if they're bowled out soon , the conditions will barely have had time to change for India's batting. So it might not matter much.
conditions might not change, but having seen what they did to the saffers (cause they did it) they may battle their way to a 1st innings lead trying not to lose too many wickets

I think that's why a lot of captains like to chase in short formats, see what the pitch is doing and what is possible rather than chance firing from the off and falling to bits, or batting a bit more balanced or conservatively and not scoring enough

plus their batting is probably just a bit better, lower order equally lacking in much substance mind which points towards trying to get in front fewest wickets down possible. leaves a little chance in it for saffers BUT they'd need to have India 4-5 down before they got in front or much of a lead and as I said before few pitches, and certainly shouldn't be international games played on such pitches, are ones you shouldn't make 100+ on

not out of it if India do score 100-150 only which I doubt, but won't bode well for a 2nd innings push for survival if 150 say is the highest

Well, I know that his dad Kevin was Zimbabwean so that makes sense, but I did not know if he grew up in Zim or SA. I had assumed that because his brother was born in SA, that he might have gone to school there.
