I'm expecting to see more of Anderson's 'unimpressed' face with the continuance of Jennings and Cook and Vince and the addition of Vince. I know he's a **** but as a bowler I can't help but feel sorry for him and Woakes having to put up with those muppets' fielding.

It's an Irish name... ?
I'm just going off of the playwright, George Bernard Shaw, although on further research it turns out it is of English origin which became established in Scotland and Ireland. Either way, it doesn't sound very Indian.

I sense a pattern here! The ECB's current modus operandi seems to be to fluctuate between the same few failing batsmen. Rocky and Malan shouldn't be so despondent as they'll return soon enough.

It's probably the Anglicised version of Shah (common Gujarati surname).

'Cept he's right.
If he can name a viable alternative then Ill listen. Otherwise the Cook out rants are all just piss and hot air.

And ftr i dont think hes right. All the focus on Cooks big score at the mcg on a flat deck in a dead rubber is bollocks. Who else in our top order made big runs there? And there is never....ever a dead rubber in a test series and certainly not in an Ashes.

I think he is cooked and we are seeing a spin off of the Ponting scenario. His continued selection seems to accommodate the acceptance and avoidance of the realities that there is no one to take his place but he is playing on too long anyway. Doesn't help that Jennings is struggling but it makes you wonder if he was in form the selectors would see things more clearly and call time on Cook's career.

I guess they can't pick him then

The thing moonsorrow doesnt seem to get is that I know hes Cooked, im not backing him like I am because I think hes got any gun series left in him.......I know he doesnt.

But of our current top order he is still the most likely and capable of scoring a big daddy hundred that can win or draw a test match for us. Even if that is only once every 6 tests.

The situation is far from ideal and Id be all for his retirement/axing if i thought we had a replacement who would exceed his output......but we just don't.

Because the series is still to be won I'd play him simply bcos he just might pull out a melbourne ton and if you drop him now you are really looking at two replacements as Jennings is looking very shaky. In that way its a little different to Ponting's (or Hussey's) situation when you're looking to mend one spot only. Overall I'd be in favour of moving a former champion on. You might as well as confront the problem and replace someone whose best days are over with someone whose best are potentially yet to come.

Yeah but if history is anything to go by, he'll need a really flat pitch (flatter than most English venues in the last 5 years) & lots of luck i.e. dropped catches or missed reviews, for him to be able to pull that off.
When a player is in terminal decline, the next big score isn't just around the corner - it's always further away than you think or hope to be precise.

I think that Cook is still more likely to score a big hundred than the other opener opener, Jennings. If an opener has to be dropped, it must be Jennings before Cook.
With the apparently talented Lollipop still to find his bearings in test cricket, the selectors would see two rookie openers as too much of a gamble.

I'm more worried about that long English middle-lower order than the top half. We're going to have to them 100-3 regularly but Stokes, Buttler, Woakes/Curran, and even that pissant Rashid (or Moeen for that matter) will more often than not account for 150-200 at least.
