In the SL team? obviously Sanga is the only option i just like the idea of giving him a chance, he must have something diffrerent.
No, in international cricket. Dhoni is the only one with a case for it really.

yah internationaly Dhoni is good, making wicket keepers look good captains. Smith is also good.
Smith's a good captain, very inspirational, but tactically he wasn't the best when he was up in England. Some poor field placings- no midwicket for KP, no third man for Cook. Jayawardene doesn't always lead from the front like Smith does, but he gets his fields spot on, times his declarations perfectly, uses his bowlers very well and i can't remember him ever getting a toss decision wrong. Sanga might be good, he's a very intelligent cricketer, but they already have as good a captain as one can reasonably hope for and i don't think they should risk shaking things up.

I think Mahela is quite a good test captain but he's ODI captaincy is to complacent.

I don't think Dhoni is one of the better captains going around - he is quite middle of the road really but has the devils luck. Most captains going around at the moment are nothing special though. But Smith is my flavor of the month.

Perhaps Strauss can invigorate the captaincy ranks a bit. Personally I'm hoping Vettori blossums though.

Selecting Kulasekara in any cricket team is a defensive option. Its saying: we don't have the guts to pick a real bowler, so we'll pick a guy who shouldn't go for many, nor do we have the stones to select proper batmen but this bloke can hold a bat.
How is Kulasekara not a real bowler. He is clearly one of the best SL has atm. There is nothing wrong with an accurate, medium-paced bowler in ODIs.

A real bowler for mine is a strike weapon, not someone who bowlers accurately and doesn't go for many (against weak opposition). He's been given a run of what 50 ODI's and a bunch of Tests to prove himself and he simply doesn't have talent nor the determination to be the lynch pin of the SL attack. History has shown Kulasekara up as a bowler who is helpless against any batsmen that wants to go after him. He isn't like Nathan Braken who can get away with 'accuracy'. Braken a) can be much quicker than Kulasekara can dream of should he choose (and its sad because its only about 10km are beyond his dreams), b) he has a physical advantage due to his height that forces batsmen not to charge out of their crease willy-nilly and c) has much more variation and the metal aptitude to use to.

I believe are at least 2 bowlers in Sri Lanka who are superior to him (not currently in the squad) and thats being very forgiving on Kulasekara.

...Kula is one of the best ODI bowlers in the world.
Malinga however is better and he should be the lynch-pin of the Sri Lankan attack upon return.

Don't worry guys, SL should be back to their best after this series. Only two more games to go....... It's funny how some indians in other forums believe Ojha is about to exceed Mendis lol

Ojha finally delivers a strong performance but this presents a selection dilemma for the remaining matches. Jadeja, Irfan and Balaji should definitely play, as should Raina and Sharma. Sehwag and/or Yuvraj should be rested for the next match and Praveen Kumar should probably get a go, essentially setting up a showdown for the reserve seamer spot(s) on the tour of New Zealand. Now, should Yusuf Pathan or Pragyan Ojha play, or both?

Gambhir, Tendulkar, Raina, Sharma, Dhoni, Yusuf, Jadeja, Irfan, Praveen, Balaji, Ojha

That may seem like a fragile lineup but I think it's worth a shot and is the best way to assess the quality of our reserves and strengthen the side. Thoughts?

Good looking side, except I'd like Yuvraj to play instead of Yusuf. Two bits and pieces in Yusuf and Jadeja might be tad too experimental.

Irfan and Laxmi will open the bowling and PK will come as the first change. Jadeja and Ojha should bowl their full quotas as well. Yusuf should be tried only when one of those 2 get hammered!

Jadeja can't be labeled a bits-and-pieces cricketer just yet as he's been called up on the basis of a domestic season in which he was 6th in the run charts and 2nd in the wickets column. Domestic success doesn't always translate but Jadeja's put up numbers that Yusuf never came close to; based on this season, he's a national prospect as both a batsman and a bowler. He may turn out to be a bits-and-pieces cricketer but right now, he should be expected to bat at 6 or 7 and complete his quota as a strike spin bowler.

He is nowhere in the league of a top 6 batsman as of now. I have seen him bowling only in the IPL, and he fairly looked the part.

Unless proved otherwise, he remains a bits and pieces for me.

Give him a chance to prove it then. Besides, we make up for the potential fragility at 6 by having a genuine all-rounder in Irfan Pathan at 8 ... or are you telling me that an attack of Pathan-Balaji-Praveen-Ojha-Jadeja-Yusuf isn't sufficient? Besides, Yuvraj playing again wouldn't do much to build the team or prepare for New Zealand.

First of all, it is a big mistake to consider this tour as anything other than nets as far as preparation for NZ tour is concerned. There is absolutely nothing in common, the conditions, pitches, bowlers, etc.

Secondly, I never said it is a mistake to go with that team you said. I would not select that team if I really wanted India to win, than to experiment. But then, this series is already won, so not much wrong in experimenting.

By playing Praveen, Irfan and Balaji, three of the leading candidates for the reserve spot in the test squad, the management gets an opportunity to assess who's in form and who's likely to threaten international opposition in NZ. Given that not all of Yusuf, Jadeja and Ojha will make the one-day squad for NZ and beyond, this is also a good opportunity to give them as many chances as possible so that we know who the best options are going forward.
