***Official*** India in South Africa 2017/18

What a wonderful day at the cricket, still along way to go so a lot can still happen.
I will be honest some dust went into my eye when Steyn took that wicket

Is there a story behind the song they play when Morne Morkel starts a bowling spell. I have heard it a couple of times and its really odd choice.

Dale Steyn uses this one:

England bowlers after a frustrating tour of Australia will find the needed release when they bowl to Kohli next year.

How did Steyn bowl in his short spell? **** I hope he’s back for good now.
You couldn't tell he'd been out for as long as he has, his pace was good and he got some decent shape through the air early in his spell, but conditions weren't quite as conducive to bowling as they were when India bowled first thing. His accuracy was good and he'll be pleased with his short burst. Expect him to be a real handful in the morning if the pitch has as much life in it as this morning.

Late 130s mostly. Good enough accuracy. Fairly big away swing, but swinging a bit earlier than peak Steyn. Basically looked like he has for the second half of his career when the ball is moving around but he is not in God mode.

I feel like he's been past his best with the new ball (pace down and God mode less frequent, although more accurate and better with the old ball) for a few years now but I'm not getting the impression he's lost anything from his time out.

International Debutant
Steyn doesn't bowl at top speed with the new ball and hasn't for years. He saves the real pace for when it starts reversing.

He is still quick enough with the new ball at late 130's but it's more important to be accurate then. He still all the skills of old in that short spell.

No shame in getting out for a low score to this bowling line up. One of the AT greatest ever. The wi quartet didn't have a good spinner. So which attack competes the current 5 in SA? Two attacks come to my mind.
Wasim Waqar Akhtar Saqlain and Mushtaq
McGrath Gillespie Lee and Warne
That wasn't really a great attack in Tests. By the time Akhtar came along, Wasim and Waqar were finished as Test bowlers. They do have a few notable performances in ODIs together (especially the 2-1 win over Australia at their peak in Australia in June 2002) but nothing of note in Tests.

It's absolutely crazy. I mean if they actually thought giving bumrah a test here was a good idea why not atleast give him a go at home against SL? Ishant did well there and now he's dropped for a debutant for some reason.
This is where I think this was a last minute thing not a planned one like with Hardik. You knew Hardik was going to play here because they gave him a debut earlier and rested him for the ODIs.

The Bumrah/Rohit one I think has more to do with their recent LO exploits and the accolades they have got just before the South Africa series. Rohit got a lot of praise and attention for his 200 and Bumrah made it to every ODI/T20 side of the year and was hailed as one of the best LO bowlers of the year.

As I said, this a classic Pakistan selection - let's drop our Test opener Sami Aslam who has scored runs in England and New Zealand for Sharjeel who has scored in ODIs.

SC fans mostly don't differentiate between formats and think excelling in 1 can mean you can excel in the other like now Pak fans want Fakhar to play in Tests. Sometimes I think maybe the selectors/think tank view things the same way.

Yeah spot on I think.

In defence of Rohit he's really improved his Test batting in recent times -- I know OS and I go on about it a bit, but it's true -- but I don't really think that's why he was picked. The Bumrah selection gives us a bit of insight into the Rohit one really; you're right.

I think selectors all around the world at the moment are over-estimating their own depth in specific conditions a bit. Kohli and whoever else has input to India's selection seem to think that if Rahane is out of form they can just drop him for Rohit in South Africa.. or if Dhawan is in great form they can get him in the side here and expect him to carry that on.. it'd be great for India if it were true, but India don't have the batting depth for these sort of conditions to be so picky about recent form. In India it'd be fine, but here it's silly. It's very predictable though; I was talking about exactly this happening a month ago.

^ Correct and I am pretty sure both Rohit/Bumrah selections were entirely Kohli. Don't think MSK Prasad from India is deciding the Playing XI. Its Kohli and Shastri and Shastri has a job because of Kohli so he basically gets the team he wants.
