It's 34 unique XIs
I honestly think this is a good approach considering the squad India has. There were always enough star players and match winners available that he was able to experiment and try out different combinations. As a result of this approach, they now have loads of options and aren't really over dependant on a single player in any of the positions.

Most of the selections haven't been controversial imo. Binny and the few times Bhuvs was dropped were lame. Gambhir recall was dire. Karn Sharma, Raina were also bad.

The rest were mostly stuff like rotating openers thanks to injuries, rotating quicks, going from 5 bowlers to 4, 3 spinners to 2 etc.

This SA tour has seen the worst selections by far.

Think Indian Xi was the same in first two tests of the home series against England ?
I think Mishra played in one of those and Giant was brought in in the 2nd match.

The 34 unique lineups is quite an amazing stat. Overall it's hard to be too critical of the selection policy (prior to this tour) given the results. I mean, they brought in guys like Karun Nair, Jayant Yadav, Kuldeep etc., partly due to injuries, and they all generally did well, and promptly got dropped as soon as they had one or two ordinary matches. Can't complain about them trying to invest in Pandya either, he's a great talent.

Three spinners. No wonder test cricket is dying.

No need to change the SA side for Wanderers, same side can play I think, unless Markram is injured. Then De Bruyn might have to open again.

If this was a decided I would say maybe we need to shore up the button and move QDK down to 7, but I think as it stands we can leave the team balance the same.

Ten days more of practice in SA would have made difference - Shastri - ESPNcricinfo

Incidentally, there have been reports that the BCCI offered to send the Test specialists early to South Africa, but the team management shot the idea down.

"There was a thought [to send the Test specialists early] but then you are disjointed," Shastri said. "Even as a team you are disjointed. Who is going to handle things here? Preparation wise or whatever."
Shastri's head needs to be disjointed from his neck.

I hate him so much. We'd have probably lost this series even without all the ridiculous management decisions, but these morons have hurt our chances hugely. The series hasn't been a lopsided hammering even with rubbish preparation and nonsense selections. It's so frustrating.

Also I like how he says "It's easy to say this in hindsight". Yeah because no one was saying that coming to SA with zero warm-ups was bad, right? Go **** yourself.
