Inzamam out of Test, Umar may play

By our correspondent

KARACHI: Pakistan on Saturday night short-listed 12 players for the third and final Test against India with captain Inzamam-ul-Haq not included in the final squad from which the playing eleven would be selected before the toss.

"At the team meeting the players has been told that Inzamam was still facing problems with his back and is unlikely to play on Sunday. And for the moment they have short-listed 12 players with pacers Mohammad Sami and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan also out of contention," a team source told ‘The News’.

The 12-member squad from which Pakistan is expected to pick its final eleven includes Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Faisal Iqbal,

Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Danish Kaneria, Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul.

If Inzamam does not play then Younis Khan will lead the side, the second time he will do so in a Test after the first Test against the West Indies in Bridgetown last year in May.

Pakistan lost that match for which Inzamam was not available due to an ICC ban.

The source said Umar Gul who last played a Test against India at Lahore in April 2004 and took five for 31 to set up a big win is likely to play the Test after recovering from a stress fracture of the back.

That's interesting. I still want to see this from a creditable source, ie cricinfo.

Inzy definently not playing??

GRRR... GRRR..GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR..

That's the sound of a 3.0 litre Turbo result killer and it wont let me sleep. Available from all good home & gardening stores, every captain should own one ;)

Let's hope it is a decent pitch...

It that case Pak should go into match with six specialist batsmen.

yes now that i think of it, pakistan will be well served to play 6 specialist batsmen. the pakistani tail (8-11) is clearly weaker than the indian tail (pathan, kumble, khan, rp singh) and if inzi isn't there, there is an even greater need for batting formidability. opening with akmal will allow them to play razzaq as a 4th seamer, but if akhtar, asif and gul can't do the job, i doubt razzaq can. he's not the bowler he once was.

If Inzi doesn't play, then i think Razzaq will be in for sure..
they will classify him very important, as he got his 5 wicket haul against Srilanka in Karachi..

That will seriously weaken Pak batting, going into match with just 4 specialist batters seems stupidity to me.

And i don't think Razzak can trouble Indian batters, he might have taken 5 wkts but thats history and i don't see much into it.

Wow. I thought India would've liked to bat first. Put on a good total and then put Pakistan under pressure, specially without Inzi's presense.
