Pakistan ODI Preview
This is my preview for the Pakistani team in the ODIs.
Salman Butt: This guy is still very young and very raw but has shown his maturity at this early age. I am very impressed with his style of batting and no doubt this guy has enormous talent and potential. His off and cover drives are just sensational and most of them are played with lots of bottom hand and wrist. His weakness is his weight shift as he is always caught in awkward situations during batting. He needs to improve his shot selection and needs to learn how to cover for the movement of the ball. Can’t forget his battle during the first test against England as he provided some decent scorecard for Pakistan to defend. I suggest that he should open.
Imran Farhat: I like his aggressive style of batting but again his shot selection is very poor. His bread and butter are his pull shot and it can never be your strong point. I still like to see him play. How can he be adjusted in the team, well I have a radical ideal will come to it towards the end of the post.
Yasir Hameed: Don’t like this guy much and don’t know why. The only good shot I have seen from him is his cover drive or playing straight down the ground. Lacks aggression and doesn’t seems to me he is that much talented. Imran Farhat and Yasir Hameed both can compete for the opener spot.
Younis Khan: Not that much talented as Yousif or Inzi but he is a hard worker. Technically good batsman and can convert himself into Dravid kind though light years away from him right now. His fielding at closing spots is an added advantage and he is very sound vice captain. I hope one day he will be captain and would be able to fill Inzi shoes. No doubt he will be playing.
M. Yousif: Most elegant and classy batsman Pakistan has ever produced. All I have is praise for him.
Inzi: Needs to lose some weight and become more physical fit. If he carries on this way, he will become what Bambino was for Yankees. His batting needs no praise but still wish to see him in good physical form.
Kamran Akmal: Just work a little more on his keeping though he is awesome jack in the box behind the stumps and even better with a bat.
Afridi: Freaky Freddy needs to calm down his verbal aggression. Though I don’t blame him as he is a pathan, LOL. Can take the game away from opposition single handedly.
Razzaq: Got good value addition in bowling and awesome strike power in batting. Needs to do some yoga so can lose some stiffness and be better in the field.
Shoaib: Needs no praise but man I miss his slower bowl. Try to deliver few of them and also notch a bit down on verbal aggression and abuse.
Rana: Very smart and intelligent bowler. A hard worker though lacks natural talent. Still remember him taking six wickets against India last year in third odi and was also Man of the Series. Needs to play.
M.Asif: The new kid on the block. Real happy to see him performing well. From his interview doesn’t look like a newcomer on the Pakistani cricket scene. Very mature bowler and with his tight line and length he complements Shoaib Akhtar beautifully. Batsman are bit defensive against Shoaib but with Asif on the other end bowling good length, it would be hard to score from him. So both can bowl good in pairs. He is just new and one performance on the green top does not makes him Macgrath. Needs to perform consistently and not to fade away as Sami did. Hope to see him going up and nowhere else.
Shoaib Malik: Good all-rounder with lot of value addition in both bowling and batting. Needs to play. If he plays he needs to bat at an early position. His running between the wickets is special and he can hit spinners out of the park at any stage of the game. So I think he can come between overs 15 and 30. His singles will assure the rotation of strike.
Team Composition Idea: I have this idea that Pakistan can play with a regular opener accompanying Salman Butt. It can be Farhat or Yasir but I personally prefer Farhat. In this case they can make Shoaib Malik their super-sub. If they bat first they got two specialist openers which will strengthen the batting line-up and Shoaib can come up to bowl as a super-sub against a batsman. Inzi can be super subbed as he is usually out of ground anyways, LOL just joking. If Pakistan bowl first and don’t feel that Afridi or Razzaq can bowl complete 20 overs than they can supersub Farhat and bring Shoaib in to help in the bowling. During batting he can always be supersubed for Asif and again he will strengthen the batting line up. What you guys think?
Yasir Arafat: Very good all-rounder is what I hear from the early rumors. He got 9 wickets against England in the warm up match whereas in the second warm up game Asif got 10 wickets. So think he can be a good all-rounder. Can be groomed at the super-sub position. Will surely like to see him perform in couple of games.
Arshad Khan: A good off-spinner, can be very handy in the one day game. I think he will preferred at the super-sub position against Arafat and will be much to my dismay. But if he is super-subed and play as bowler, Pakistan will have 7 bowlers at its hand and gives them lots of options in bowling department.
Grounds: I think that Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Karachi pitches would produce good games. These pitches are not so much overused and will be good for batting and will have some juice for the bowlers. Lahore pitch will be dull because too much cricket is played in this stadium in the recent past. It was first the U-19 Australian tour that took place on Lahore pitches, than a tests against England, 2 One days against England, and a test against India. I don’t think there will be anything for the bowlers on this pitch. Who ever will bat first will have lot of advantage on Lahore pitch. Also, there is dew factor in the evening. In Faisalabad, the only concern is dew and moisture due to weather and mind you there are no floodlights at this venue.
I think all the pitches will be supportive more to batsman than bowlers and we won’t be seeing any of the green tops. Karachi might be different but I won’t bet on it. Any team that has to win the series will have to chase at least once and come out with a win. Most likely it can be twice that a team will have to chase and come out on the top.
Predictions: One-days are totally different ball game than test matches. In my view both teams will start with 50/50 percent chance of winning the ODI’s. If India wins the toss on the first ODI and uses few new bowlers it can win against Pakistan, as Pakistanis won’t be used to new Indian bowlers. Also, as I said Lahore toss would be crucial to win. Pakistan will high over their recent victories as they have won four straight ODI series and are also placed good on the ODI team ranking status. Pakistan strength would be its bench strength and how good it will adjust to Indian bowlers and batsman. I do think that if Pakistan wins the first match it will win the series, as it will be very hard for India to win three matches in a trot against Pakistan. Well once the first ball is bowled all the predictions will go out of the window, and only the team that plays good on the given day will win.
Any comments are welcome. Looking forward for an exciting series.
