Rahane's really done well to get after Anderson this whole tour, those straight sixes are such a delight to watch.

I say Rahane should be permanent opener and we send Rohit back to number 4, it works out better for both bats.
Spot on. And if Rohit continues his ****, just throw the gauntlet to Pujara. We could use a stable number 4 now that our number 3 has turned into a jack-off jimmy.

Every four years we start building towards a World Cup, but what we put out in the World Cup rarely resembles anything we've been trying to build in anything but the final few months before. Best example probably in 07 when Nixon, Loye etc were drafted in. Granted Loye didn't make the WC but there you go.

Of course teams should build to the World Cup but we seemed to build a whole strategy (and not a good one) around a player like Trott. A **** up really

We'll probably go okay in the 2019 WC with it being at home and all, so for once the 'building' we do in the intervening summers might actually be relevant

It's stupid that NZ are rated two spots below England.
I think that actually shows that for all the grumbling etc about how bad England are at ODIs, actual results haven't been as bad as is being made out.

Case in point is all the talk about how a Cook, Bell, Trott top 3 was too one-paced and not good enough for modern ODIs yet it was on the back of that top 3 that the team went to number 1 in the world for an (admittedly brief) time.

Or that you had the best side suited to your own home conditions, especially before August hit.
Or that you were standing still while the rest of the world was moving forward.
Or that you were banking on Cook to maintain a purple patch few thought that he was capable of in ODIs.

Your point about the home conditions, though, is why I can actually see us doing well in the 2019 WC

We won in the UAE and New Zealand last time we went to each tbf. Played seven won six actually. In fact, post world cup we only lost two of our first nine series (both in India). We were pretty good for a while but post Champions Trophy it's all gone to ****.

Notably the completely go to **** stage coincided with our completely go to **** stage in tests, which people seem to be conveniently forgetting when it comes to deciding everything is wrong with our philosophies and team selection in limited overs.

What's our record since Trott's been out the side?

Trott's been in the runs in List A, if he feels up to it i'd have no problem with him at 3 and a basher at 4.

Cook (he isn't going anywhere so no point pretending)
Hales
Trott
Ali
Morgan
Bopara
Buttler
Broad
Tredwell
Anderson
Rankin

Its not going to pull up trees but it also might not get murdered constantly.

Trott was nowhere near as bad as he was made out to be. Every side in the world would take a bloke at 3 who'll score a 50 you can build around.

No he wasn't bad at all, Cook/Bell/Trott absolutely was bad/muddled thinking though.
We only ever lost one bilateral series with it though, and if Bell hadn't been wrongly given out stumped in the CT final trophy, we probably would've won that too. A top three who, on average, scored at about five an over is not at all an issue when everyone from 4 down to about 9 can score at 7+ with ease.

Bell's the problem. ****e at ODIs and always has been.
This is just so misinformed. He's been comfortably our best batsman over the past two or three years. He doesn't score enough hundreds but he's actually been incredibly consistent. Slipped in form a bit recently (like everyone else too) but not nearly to the degree of others who are culpable such as Cook, Morgan, Root and previously Bopara. In fact, for all the talk of Morgan being our best one day batsman for a few years, his results have been incredibly disappointing in comparison with Bell.

In fairness, Trescothick is the only batsman in English ODI history who was good at converting starts into 100s. But yeah, Bell's conversion rate is particularly piss poor.

Kevin Pietersen

The ratio is quite misleading for middle-order batsmen in ODIs. Pietersen, for example, was good at converting starts to 100s. But he batted in middle-order, so had to try to score quicker during end overs. [and get out / remain not out for 83 in 84 balls, depending on the situation]
