Karthik would probably have played anyway, I just don't like to upset the balance of a team by playing a wicket keeper as a pure batsman. Besides, if the selectors didn't think Dhoni's keeping is up to scratch then they should have let Karthik keep wicket and played Dhoni as the specialist batsman, he is probably good enough to do that.
The Indian team has to decide how good a batsman they think Karthik is. He is being played as a specialist batsman. A specialist batsman at number seven? That must be a first of sorts.

that definitely is not the first of its kind. Kaif had always played at No.7, Dinesh Mongia donned the role in WC 03.

I think Kathik coming at 7 has more to do with the other Dinesh - ie Mongia.
Have no clue why he's in - perhaps there really is no other all rounder in the
country even worth blooding, or perhaps this series is not the one to do that.

In any case the finisher role is key and it appears that the management has
more faith in Karthik. Dhoni & Dravid are too valuable at the moment to push low,
Yuvi too valuable at the top.

On the fielding positions too:
Karthik really proving to be flexible here (and too flexible for his own good), perhaps why Dhoni dons the gloves is that Karthik is the better fielder in the outfield.

Dinesh Mongia is the weak link here, need to fix the all rounder, preferably with a seamer. All will then fall into place.

In modern ODI cricket, it's hardly a first. Yuvraj and Kaif occupied the 6 and 7 for quite a while during the Dravid-keeping era, while Australia used a range of players just after the 2003 World Cup including Bevan, Clarke and Hussey before they eventually gave the gig to Watson. In fact, during the times when Watson is injured (fairly regularly), Australia in recent times have usually had a specialist batsman at #7 - usually Hussey, recently Brad Hodge and Cameron White (who did indeed play as a specialist batsman regardless of what anyone will tell you) doing so. Sri Lanka played Russel Arnold there for the entirety of the World Cup while Aftab Ahmed and Mohammad Ashraful have even found themselves down there for Bangladesh when Rahim gets promoted to #3 as a steadying player. The West Indies have used players like Lendl Simmons to bat as low as 8 as well.

So no, not a first at all.

Yeah not sure what SJS is on about. Who is Karthik supposed to bat higher than?

Anyway good to see Gambhir get some runs.

Oh none of them. Thats exactly the point.

WE have someone like Mongia who is making the side ONLY because he can also bowl. We are not going to take him as pure batsman. But when he does play alongwith someone like Kaarthik who is playing as a pure batsman, Mongia bats higher.

So what does it say about how the selectors rate Kaarthik's batting?

If they are going to play Kaarthick as pure batsman they might as well treat him like one and send him above Mongia at least.

Maybe today will be different but if so that wopuld be because Kaarthik got runs yesterday and Mongia didnt. It still doesnt tell me how they rated Kaarthik's batting versus Mongia's before the first game.

Clearly they thought Mongia was a better batsman.

I too can't understand what SJS is trying to say, India and for that matter almost every team plays with 7 batsmen in ODI cricket nowadays.

Good knock that from Gambhir though, but another Indian batsman suffered from cramps while playing a long knock!!

He has gained pounds (though drops dont show in the ocean) but whats worse his batting has declined.

One felt Zaheer should have come earlier as he struggled with his wild swishes.

With Dhoni battin g at three and Yuvraj out early, India badly needed someone to play the big shots from that strong position in which they found themselves but there was no one.

This is where the pros and cons of Dhoni at number three need to be weighed.

BTW, Sehwag should get a hiding for throwing away his wicket to ordinary deliveries in both games. With Uthappa waiting in the wings and Saurav and Sachin at home, he is not doing himself any favours. THe man seems to have decided to take his 'I-dont-care-what-you-say" attitude to the limit of rebellion.

And to think that he may have led the side if Dravid was unfit.

Sehwag has got Dravid's backing so he can play wild shots and throw away his wicket and still retain his place in the side.

But i think enough is enough now Sehwag needs to dumped from the Indian team.

Javed Omar really isn’t cut out for six an over run chases, even when he was waltzing down the track it looked completely faux and unnatural.
