Yuvraj on other hand failed to cement his place in test team all through his career after getting good amount of opportunities. Having seen Rohit's temperament in his 7+ years of international career, I wouldn't be comfortable relying on someone who would give away his wicket needlessly on regular basis. He might turn out to be Shane Watson of India in batting if he continues to gift his wicket.

But as you said he is young and also lucky that no.5 and 6 spots are up for grabs unlike in Yuvraj's case where he had to wait for his opportunity initially. He better make use of the opportunities being given to him now.
Yuvraj didn't average 60+ in FC cricket.. Rohit has more Test potential than Yuvi.

Rohit Sharma has a lose technique. Too many gaping holes. It is invariable he will pop a catch to a fielder.

FTR regardless of how good this last day has been this was still a rubbish road of a pitch and Test cricket is better off without another.

It was Warner's aggression, Kohli's skill and Clarke's declaration that got us this result. The pitch is poor.
Really? One team took 20 wickets.

I love Adelaide and it sure produces a lot of results for a pitch that's cursed as a Roady MacRoad.

I don't say every pitch should be an Adelaide but there should be an Adelaide. If you believe cricket should offer every variety of pitches and conditions then so should you.

Yea it's ok for a pitch to be a road if it turns and gives the spinners a chance on the 5th day.. otherwise we'd never have 5 day games.

Arguable. Yuvraj made some Duleep 100s against strong attacks which showed potential too. If domestic fc averages were indicative Wasim Jaffer would have made 10000 test runs.

Fair point.. but Rohit has already shown his potential in ODIs.. he deserves a longer stint than 8 tests.

Whatever I have seen of Sharma I don't rate him. People keep saying he needs more discipline but the problem is bigger. People said the same about Jadeja. You need a tighter game even if it is an attacking game. Else you look careless in the longer version while in reality it is a technique issue.

Edit - Jadeja is Ajay Jadeja.

Rohit's ODI career is evidence of why he should not be in the test side. Too inconsistent, chokes under pressure, cannot be relied on.

Thats the problem. He has only shown potential so far in his 7-8 years career but hasn't turned into a reliable player even in ODIs.

Yes!!!!!

A lot of guff is talked about Adelaide Oval, it has turned up some great test matches that more often than not have produced results.........if you've got an attack that can take advantage there's always something on offer at the back end.

Well it feels like he gets 200 if he gets to 50 in ODIs atm.. but what do I know it's not like the last I saw of him he took a mean dump on the SL bowlers for a ~25% improvement on the highest ODI score...

Point is even if he turns out to be a bust, he deserves at least a good 20 test run..

Couple of big knocks wont make him a really good player. Its the consistency that does. And one crucial element needed to be consistent is temperament that he visibly lacks in.

You would think a guy averaging almost 60 domestically in the Indian circuit would have boatloads of patience and temperament.

It was Rohit's first match in Australia in the longer formats. I agree with the sentiment that he could be reckless with his shot selections but he needs a decent run of games like any batsman. And to be fair to him, that ball he got out to from Lyon was a very good delivery. Especially for someone who is new to the crease.

He can be reckless sometimes and he has these brainfarts. He has reduced that in ODIs which is why he is performing much better nowadays. He has to integrate that in the longer formats now.

Considering that we have already toured RSA, NZ, ENG and AUS over the last year and half, I expect him to perform well in the next 8-10 tests following this series and maybe he might take his average closer to 50 by playing in familiar conditions. All might look good until we head out for another tough overseas tour.

India didn't lose the test because of Rohit Sharma. They lost it because they took 12 wickets.
