yes well after 3 years of constant **** from the middle order it's about time we took a chance.
yes

and the last three guys we've taken a chance on have been our last three men of the match - Cummins, Pattinson, Warner

the real risk is to do nothing, to make no changes, and keep getting served up diabolical batting collapses every 2nd Test or so

Yep, said it before. Waiting on Ponting to regain his form of yore is like putting you pay packet through the pokies. There's always an outside chance you'll win the jackpot, but it's much more likely your kids are going hungry again this week.

If they want to send him off put on a charity all-star t20 match.

Being adamant about dropping someone when you've no idea who should replace them is absurd.
Anyone who could average more than 35 (and actually make the occasional century) would be an improvement, because that's all Ponting is anymore as a batsmen.

The thing is even if we hit the jackpot with these guys they will be retiring in a year or so anyway. So really what do we gain in that time?

If we apply the Katich logic (being dropped after 2 bad series) then Hussey should be gone his stats are much worse than what Katich was dropped for. Now because the mess we are in there are other fish to fry in Ponting, Haddin and Hughes.

Come on down Marcus North..

What's with the name change btw?

Yeah, even the one traditional round of matches before Christmas (usually running from December 18-22 or so) would have been handy. A ton from someone like Wade, Christian or Ferguson (who went large against the WACAs last week) could have been significant.

They're not actually cutting the number of shield matches are they? Just reorganising them so they're completely useless

no, still a full quota of 10 for each State, just none from mid-December until the end of January - when the marque Test series is played each Summer

And further more, in Ponting's case, he's lost the ability to convert 50's into 100's. a rather important thing. and i mean you can't expect that to all of a sudden come back even if he was to hit a ton on boxing day. just makes it 15 50's and 3 100's since 2009, instead of 2

North actually wouldn't be far off being of more value to the team as a batsman atm. Despite his ****ty overall record, he actually still had an excellent conversion rate (something like a century about every 6 innings, from memory). When he was playing he actually won us/saved us a few games because of his occasional big scores. Ponting hasn't won us many games for a long time. In any case, though, we shouldn't have to stoop to the depths of North. I'd much prefer someone like Khawaja in for Ponting, because, even though in the short term he might not be any better, at least you aren't wasting valuable time; you're allowing him to develop as a player etc.

the whole 'not scoring tons' thing could be over looked if he was batting at 6....but i mean we're trying to get watson down there for the exact same reason

Well as far as I'm concerned, if you aren't making consistent 50's, which Ponting hasn't been, then you have to be making the occasional big score to compensate. If you aren't doing that, then you simply aren't making enough runs. At least Watson has been making 50's pretty consistently (up until his very recent drop in form, that is).

For those interested in Fantasy Cricket, a Test competition has been created for this series.

A forum fans sub competition has also been created and the key is 1323744862.

What ever happened to that guy Ferguson? Batted like a genius in the ODI's he played against NZ a couple of years ago.

One compelling reason to leave Hughes in the side for the India series is that it is the best thing to do for his long term development as a test match opener, given that there is no more shield cricket now until after the tests. There were some promising signs (if Kerry O'Keefe is to be believed) in Hughes' second innings at Hobart and he actually has a couple of decent scores in recent history (cf. Ponting).

Hughes, I feel, should be persevered with.

Averages around 35 in FC cricket. His home ground is Adelaide Oval. He should never play a test for Australia until he adds ten to this average at least.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
