Maybe it's because he's been mediocre to average for a long, long time without any real substantial breakthrough innings and aussies want to some fresh batting talent into the team to accompany the good bunch of new bowlers?
Yeah let's not pretend Ponting has been scoring 50's every test for the past 3 years. He deserves to hang on after this, but it doesn't mean he has suddenly come good after 3 years of poo. Such selective memory ffs.

Got a feeling that a pitch scanner would show it's sunk in the middle a little, like in the pic below. So many players chopped on or been cut in half by all bowlers this match.
