More batting ability news:

Seventh offset - second digit:
0(8)-7(F) is a raw batting skill value, as you already know. The second digit on the eighth offset adjusts this:

1 is low skill, F is high skill (within the level determined by the second digit of the seventh offset).

Also, 0 has the same effect as 1 (and E as F), because the even numbers are for lefties and the odd numbers for the righties.

Hi guys, am here to help!?!

OK, there's a lot been done and am v impressed!

Thing is, this offset-hopping is a little confusing for me. I need a practical example, if someone is willing to tell me quickly!

Tresco's 7th and 8th offsets are 03 and 0C...I think...what does that entail? Could someone explain each digit...please??

Very quickly:

First digit, 0 means the same as 8. It means he is a batsman, basically.

3 means he's a pretty good batsman - nothing special, a bit worse than Vaughan and Butcher, better than most crap ones, on a par with Flintoff.

The C then adjusts this, so he is slightly below Flintoff, who has an F.

Hope that helps.

Sam just about covers it.

The key process we're doing now is working out bowling abilities. We're fairly sure they're influenced by digit 1 from offset 11 and digit 2 from offset 10 - we're just looking for evidential proof.

That means hacking an offset and running a new game as Australia manager upto your first game - you can then see the season results for the player you hacked.

And Halsey - FF makes you expensive, but we've also found it doesn't half help boost your Strike Rate!

That's kewl but, going back on the topic, I cannot accept that in the batting offset, 0 means the same as 8. Everything is for a reason, right?

It's interesting that, in the table, Vaughan, Butcher, Hussain, Thorpe and Stewart have 8s - and they are seen as more recognised test batsmen than the others, who have 0s. Tresco underperforms in the game and has a 0; perhaps an 8 would have helped him.

Tendulkar has an 8. Lara has an 8. Ponting has an 8. Test superstars.

Hick has a 0. Afthab Habib has a 0. Disappointing at test level, to say the least.

Any comments? Is this worth testing??

I'm not sure I agree that offset 13 is for just "economy rate"

If you scroll down the column, you will see that Ian Bell (him again!) has the highest rate of all. Yet I use him regularly as a 4th/5th bowler, and he is very successful, picking up two or three wickets most innings. His economy rate is not the lowest in the world, and he can go for a couple of expensive overs, but its not outlandish and no he doesn't get "creamed around the park". He's almost on the par of an all-rounder, in fact. Think he started out as a successful bowler anyways.

Maybe another offset modifies this.

Back to Offset 7.

A Flower 8
R Dravid 8
A Gilchrist 8
M Hayden 8
C Gayle 8
S Katich 8
J Langer 8
M Waugh 8
S Waugh 8

M Ramprakash 0
C Taylor 0
T Taibu 0
L Vincent 0
S Lee 0
M Bevan 0 (not a star at test cricket, unf)
D Lehmann 0
H Bashir and a lot of Bangladeshi players 0

.....I think I might be right!! Any other players you can think of??

Further testing has revealed that 13 isn't just Economy rate - it also results in a higher strike rate.

Shoaib Akhtar has 80.

Testing FF with Hussain in the "economy rate" resulted with 107 wickets in 13 games.

Your first point is interesting. However, Butcher, Stewart, Thorpe & Hussain are all poor on the game.

It's worth further testing by all means, give it a shot :)

Maybe it's something to do with mindset? :alien8:

See what happens when you edit it 0 to 8.

I changed Thorpe's 8 to an 0. His average in the 7 test matches changed from 39 to 19.

Am about to change Hick's from 0 to 8.

Mindset? Perhaps. But don't batsmen's preferences cover this anyway? Unless its a mental toughness stat or summat.

I still think 8=more chance of having a test career. The Australian batsmen with 8 tend to dominate the test squad. Anyways. We shall see.

Interesting. I'm a little transfixed by King's Lynn v Exeter right now.. will get cracking at full time.

Well maybe it's what seperates test class batsmen from good first class players? I mean think how many of them there are around. Which would probably be a sort of menthal stat. Just a guess but it might be right.
