*Official* First Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham - Aug 4-8 - 2021

Apart from any Australian side with Sir Donald in, obvz.
This is only relevant if you are purely interested in the difference in class between the top two batsmen and not necessarily looking to identify teams with one world class player but no batting depth. Players like Ponsford, Woodfull, McCabe, Jackson and co were quality players and Australia would have been a solid batting side in the 1930s without Bradman. But yes, the raw gap in averages of 50 runs is surely the greatest ever.

Was there ever a time where Peak smith was playing but warner wasn't before marnus came around? Could be a good shout.

Was being entirely facetious, tbf; I was countering morgie's assertion literally rather than in its obvious spirit.

Sir Don's a massive outlier for a reason.

Whatever it takes!!!
He was just darting them in but that last over was more promising. Maybe he just needs to get more confident of his left arm as far as bowling goes.

Lads......

I don't think Bairstow is good at test cricket. ?️‍♂
If that was a disqualification for selection we'd have literally one player in our top 7.

TBF to YJB, he is the only other English batter to crack 30 in the test other than Root so far...

Can't truthfully recall an English batting line up where the difference between our best batsman and anyone else is so marked.

I've seen line ups where our top chap was undeniable (Gower in the 80s, Thorpe in the 90s and early 00s, Pietersen in the later 00s) but we also had other blokes who were at least in shouting distance of them.

Root though, especially in this XI shorn of Stokes, is so far ahead of the rest it's almost embarrassing.
I'll offer you the England side in the winter of 1977/78. There was a heck of a lot of daylight between Boycott and the rest, even though that didn't quite translate to the scorecards.

bairstow is far from the biggest issue with this batting line up

interesting experiment here. lawrence is a county batsman and thakur is a county trundler. who beats who in a test match?
