It's not a coincidence that African countries became less successful at age group level once FIFA introduced bone testing in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Also, Saudia Arabia's U16 World Cup winners from 1989, presented without comment:

That reminds me of an U16's Tour to Holland as a kid........well we were U16's, not sure about our opposition in one tournament. I swear the keeper in one game had his wife and kids with him!! He also had a strong tache.....

I also remember the weather being so bad I played one game with a jumper under my shirt!!

Where are they now – the Scotland Under-16 team which came within penalties of winning the World Cup – The Scottish Sun | The Scottish Sun Just looked up who made it from that Scotland squad and only 3 of them made it through to their senior team with Paul Dickov the best known of them.
A lot of the same generation would have been part of the U21 side which reached the semi finals of the 1996 Euros (qualifying for the Olympics in the process, although they didn't go to the Games), but they went absolutely nowhere at senior level.

Pretty sure we beat Portugal in the semis in 1989, featuring Figo and Rui Costa.

The article mentioned certainly mentioned Figo, so that is some MO. It should be said that many junior sides who do well at international feature so many players who really don't make their mark in senior professional football, let alone play at full level. England's U17 World Cup winners: Where are they now? | Foden, Sancho Relatively speaking, the English U17 world cup winners have not done too bad, although a few never played at a high professional level.

Yeah, don't get the Ange bashing on this one. He's playing against the top team in the league who literally have no real injuries, with a team down to its bare bones. What did people expect to happen?
Trent not a real injury?

Gomez is back training and might get a run in the FA cup but been without him for a while. Jota the same.

Slot deserves a lot of credit for how he's managed the squad. We've had our injury issues but its never been an excuse.

Rhian Brewster haha. What a player he turned out to be

Oh gawd the first person saying it's var that meant they made that mistake, because they're not used to making decisions, sighs.

Like there was never a bad offside decision before Var.

Look I get people hate Var, but some are almost fanatical in their illogical reasoning

I remember in Kenya there was a massive age cheating scandal after our national team fielded a bunch of men in their 20s, who knocked out Ghana in an u17 World Cup qualifier

Also Leeds outof the cup

Rhian Brewster haha. What a player he turned out to be
I was so excited when he won that world cup golden boot. Followed him closely, suffered through a bunch of his matches when he was on loan at Swansea. They were absolutely dire viewing and completely clueless with the ball when they got over the halfway line. Brewster would barely get a kick but he managed to score a few. But watching him, I couldn't shake the feeling that he might not be the world class talent I'd hoped he was which seemed strange given what he'd done at that tournament.

Then I checked the names of all the other U/17s golden boot winners. There's hardly a name in there you'd recognise

I briefly thought that the Beattie playing in the back line was the same as the James Beattie of Southampton fame.

He threatened to be another Owen for a while there. I always feared he wouldn't have the physicality required for the prem, he certainly didn't have the application.

Should have bided his time and let his development happen organically. He forced his way out after seeing Sancho and Foden hit stardom. Ultimately I think he was just really poorly advised and/or there's been ego and discipline issues the whole way.

The guy in the middle looking to the kid at the end next to the GK thinking "which one of us brought our son along?"

Good old Stoke, eh? Still booing Aaron Ramsey, 15 years on. Charming.
Was that 15 years?! Literally led to me fainting outside a pub in Richmond (along with a lot of beer and an empty stomach). Could never deal with broken bones facing the wrong way since I broke my elbow aged 9,
