Again I don’t think the difference between that game and other Arsenal performances is massive. They compete well but struggle to create from open play. It looks much better when they find a way to get the first goal.
Probably helps that the pressure was off them against us somewhat - I had a feeling they'd nick at least a point but not many fancied them, that and us looking to win the game (and not really turning up) went into Arsenal's hands. I think with that in mind Brighton is probably a decent game for Arsenal but then the pressure is on them to create without overcommiting against less expansive sides in West Brom, Crystal Palace and Newcastle, win v Brighton and lose those 3 games and its still been a bad run for Arsenal as you'd really want 10pts minimum from Chelsea, Brighton and those 3 sides (although in fairness most sides are struggling for consistency)

One swallow doesn't make a drunk and all that, but much, much more like it.

Not sure what to make of Arbuckle's interview after the game. On the one hand I sort of respect the honesty, but equally don't imagine his players will appreciate being completely shoved under the bus. "Lacking energy and desire" is basically managerese for "well, I did my ****ing job".
Imagine it will be fine for now but not something you'd want to do too often - his figure as a club legend might be a help and a hindrance. Help because he will be seen as genuinely caring about the club as well as his own position so might lessen perception he is shoving them under the bus solely to protect himself but hindrance as his presence as a club legend probably allows him to shift the blame to the players more longer term - Sarri would be seeing a lot more of the blame as opposed to the players if he managed yesterday as an example. Already discussions on Lampard's job but the fanbase hasn't 'turned' - tough games until start of February though - if we lose most of those I'd suspect things might get a little more poisonous and if the blame is shifted to players repeatedly you could get a situation of almost supporting the players or supporting the manager.

For what its worth I'm Lampard in for now but think he's been afforded a kinder time because of his success as a player something I don't agree with. However, I think he should have the rest of the season at least unless there is a massive underachievement (bottom half and dropping down the league for example). Games v Man City, Leicester and Spurs not only big to help stop a slight slump but also would allow Lampard to shush suggestions he is lacking as a manager in the biggest games

Is anyone seriously considering ditching the fatman before the season ends?

I mean, in the end Abrahmovic is not open to the same sentiment as fans and certain members of the Press, he needs top 4 I reckon, but he's on course to do that, next year I would say with the investment he needs to win a Prem or Champions League, that seems harsh, but it's pretty much the way Roman rolls.

Interesting day for Everton and Villa though, suppose they could change a few narratives.

I think Lampard and Solskjaer are basically OK managers whose teams perform roughly to the level of the players they have. The football world really struggles when people are average. There’s nothing to argue about.

From the owners’ perspective the most sensible approach to both would be to let them go when the opportunity to get someone properly good comes up. But that’s not how chairmen usually do things.

Chelsea haven't spent £250m on players to be average though.

Spending about £130m on Havertz and Werner to then not play them in their best positions is particularly bad, particularly Havertz who is a smashing player.

Yeah Lampard is looking worse this season. The squad improved massively over the summer and they don’t look much better. But then most new signings aren’t great straight away and it’s still early in the season.

Not that I’d be shocked if he turned out to be worse than average but I’d still say he’s been average so far.

Chelsea fans (and others) tend to quite badly overrate style of their non-summer signed players imo. Particularly Reece James and Mason Mount. Both of who are fine of course. But they're not bloody Cafu and Ronaldinho.

Is Mount better than Maddison or Grealish? No.
Reece James would be about 5th in line for England.

I think James is one of those players where the line between potential and ability gets blurred. Right now he’s fine, but he could be one of the best RBs around. Reminds me of Kyle Walker a lot, very physically dominant but with a few big mistakes in him.

Mount is the type of player that gets overrated by his own fans and underrated by everyone else. Smart and tidy player who brings out the best in the players around him, but sometimes I think he makes people forget what a properly good CAM looks like. It’s the same position as Bruno Fernandes ffs. In that attack he should be creating and scoring far, far more than he does.

I reckon he’s better than Maddison. Maddison has been in and out of the Leicester team this past year.

I was sceptical of him early in his career but Grealish is sooo good these days. Genuinely one of the best in the league.

Considering for years England mid-fielders have been almost incapable of keeping clever possession, I'm just glad we've got a few young uns seemingly able to do it. Would put Ward-Prowse and obviously Foden in there too.

BARNES OUT
A lot of the takes out there about the postponement show why England is still completely ****ed. Especially irresponsible from the Journos spouting it.

Also, where was this "dock them points! bringing the game into disrepute!" energy when the Villa-Newcastle game was postponed barely 4 weeks ago? There's no agenda, no, definitely none...

What are people saying? I don't think people can fault City that much. I know some Utd fans want a walkover in the semi but that's somewhat understandable as its the only way Bruno will get a rest and obviously City the superior team.

I think Everton won't be to upset with the game cancelled tonight, they have had a brutal few weeks so needed a rest one way or other.

I do quite like Reece James is he world class no but I think he's pretty good also think the same about Mount both have been 2 of our better players this season too. I think also you have to consider that Jorginho, Kante, Kovacic and Havertz are fighting over 3 midfield roles if you take Mount out and Azpi is in reserve to James so they arent being selected due to a lack of options.

Certainly some on social media are calling for his head, I agree unless things massively go south he should have the season although I think the top 4 is nip and tuck with Leicester, Spurs, Manchester clubs (maybe Everton) all hunting for 2nd to 4th too. Ideally I think Lampard should be achieving more then top 4 - ideally progression from last season and signs that we are closing the gap to the top - it's been a weird season so far - a handful of games ago he was probably on track to do that a slight slump and not so much now but win 3/4 games on the bounce and we are fine again most probably. I think also slightly worrying whilst we've been good at set pieces especially away from home we've arguably gone backwards offensively.

I think ideally what we are missing is probably a Declan Rice I didnt want him as think he is massively overpriced and still don't really but adds more physicality to midfield and we need a defensive minded midfielder to partner Kante. I can see the merit of playing Werner off the left (although you then lose Pulisic who was great at end of last season). The issue is really you need him as narrow as possible, Chilwell then becomes solely responsible for the width so you need mobile and defensively minded CMs to cover up the gaps.

Werner did play upfront with Leipzig but normally with a Poulsen or Schick. Sadly hard to see how you fit those 2 plus 2 wingers (especially when we have so few and they are injury prone) and not be completely exposed defensively.

You been looking on twitter have you as you do realise that if you believe what is on there then Jeremy Corbyn was going to win by 50 seats, Trump was cheated in the US election and that Covid 19 is made up.

I just don't understand why we played three games with half a team a couple of months back when there were clearly grounds for postponement. Surely that's the way to go. Not sure why anyone would think otherwise tbh

Well my lot had a game called off at home before christmas which meant we have now played 4 away games in a row, Sunderland had 8 or 9 covid cases apparently so it was logical the game was called off. Good job we got 10 points in the 4 away games as if the season gets called off we are midtable now and have a game in hand anyway on a couple of sides so PPG is good.
