Can't honestly recall it being worse in nearly 40 years of following the Arse.
Me neither in my 30 or so years, but in the context we now find ourselves, I guess what I mean by "unfathomably bad" = a genuine prospect of relegation. Barring that, things can't really get any worse, given any chance of league success is gone already. So if it's a case of just treading water around midtable, I'd stick with him if that's what can be achieved, along with some improved performances. Give him another couple of transfer windows to really create "his" side.

I know Arsenal have never been relegated since they landed in the top flight, have they ever come close?

I remember them stinking the joint out in the early post-George Graham days but don't think they were ever in a fight to stay up

I think we are at the unfathomably bad stage tbh. Relegation form with relegation style football.

I have a chuckle at people online saying maybe this is the kick up the backside ownership needs so they can get serious or some **** like that. Heard the same talk when we were on the verge of dropping outside the Top 4.

Rafa is really the best I can think of right now and even then I don't know how realistic that is.

Arsenal were actually worse in the late George Graham days. Finished 10th in either 1992/93 or 1993/94.

The owners have sanctioned quite heavy spending to be fair, both on transfer fees and on player contracts. The recruitment at Arsenal in the last 2-3 years has been absolutely shocking.

Dodgy Raul being in charge of transfers and getting us attached to super agents has completely screwed us. Almost all our deals of the past few years look rather questionable in that regards. Edu being good mates with Kia is not a good thing either, his move to cull most of our scouting department is worrying too.

The worry now is that Vinai, Edu and Arteta are all extremely inexperienced at their current roles. They all talk the good talk but we need guidance right now as a club.

I thought the summer window was Arsenal’s worst in a while. Pepe hasn’t worked out but it was understandable at the time. Willian is one of those deals that shows your arse to the world, not because it’s the worst deal you could do, but because anyone with the slightest clue about squad management wouldn’t even consider it.

I’d be inclined to agree with sledger if it weren’t for Arteta’s promotion to manager. He should be nowhere near transfers, and it looks like he is. They can’t exactly demote him again so he probably just has to go.

17th in 1976 their lowest post-war finish apparently. Stayed up by 6 points. 12th (out of 22) in 1995 their worst finish of the PL era.

94/95 was the worst season I can recall, Graham got the arse for taking a bung halfway through and we had Houston in charge for the rest of it.

Vaguely flirted with relegation. I recall Liverpool dicking us 1-0 at Highbury (late Fowler goal, IIRC) late in the season and the Scousers were singing "You're going down with the Villa" only semi-ironically as we weren't yet mathematically safe.

Villa didn't actually go down either.

92/93 looks worse on paper than it was. Cups were a much more massively bigger deal back then and, as we were safe, we rested players from league games save them for the cups.

Would say 10th is still pretty poor for a side crowned champions 2 years previously.

Seem to remember both cup finals being dreadful games as well, IIRC wasn't the FA Cup Final the last one to go to a replay?

Could well be, actually. Andy Linighan with a last minute header won it for us with his nose splattered all over his face thanks to a Mark Bright elbow.

Played Wednesday in both games. Back when they were a thing.

Yeah it was the last final replay.

A couple of other things that were notable. I think the league Cup final was much later in the season at that point as I recall the games being closer together. Also, I think the League Cup final saw the first usage of names on shirts and squads numbers in English football. It was brought in the following season in the Prem

So my understanding is my team has been playing trash again this year, but when I looked at the table just now they're third with a game in hand at Xmas and only 4 points off the leaders. Genuine question, how has this happened because from what little I have seen of them this year, they have indeed been complete ****.

Mostly because the other big teams are weaker too this year. United aren’t as bad as some coverage suggested, but they still bombed out of the Champions League in the group stages.

It was one of quite a few media narratives that took hold far too early in the season. Mourinho is back, Chelsea are legit, etc. Then the table changed very quickly, as it always does at this time of year, and they haven’t really found new stories to match it.
