*Official* English Football Season 2016-17

Tom Halsey

International Coach
Man Utd. started the year with the objective of competing for the league title (amount of cash spent, Mourinho's proclamations about getting his targets etc.). They were out of it 1/4ths of the way into the season.

Spurs' goal difference was 40 or so better than Man Utd's. Europa and League Cup don't paper over those abyss-sized cracks. Not to mention how easy their draw panned out to be in Europe.
These are all fair arguments that they are a better team, but don't really answer my point (unless of course you would rather have a better league goal difference than win trophies). Would you rather win a trophy or not?

First paragraph is a fair point but tbf I'm not sure many United fans actually expected to win the league so I don't think it was too disappointing from the point of view of how the league panned out vs expectations. Strangely in hindsight, LVG's first season was probably the worst for that because I know I (and others) had genuinely high hopes for that season.

Got to say, to me "well, we had the better goal difference" is a real clutching at straws argument in any debate as to which of two teams had a better season tbh.

Not necessarily. Hardly a like for like.

Edit: That said, the weight of popular opinion seems to be against me on that one, given what was revealed by a quick Google search just now.

I was just thinking of options that would probably be available. Lukaku will go if someone gives Everton a decent bid as they need to cash in on him as he won't sign a contract. Same goes for Barkley as well.

United 'deciding' not to go for Griezmann. If that's really what's happened it's surely a mistake.
I don't think he really wanted to come.

Edit: Lukaku is a bad idea IMO. He isn't Ibra and while forcing forward play through Ibra is one thing doing that with Lukaku seems like a bad idea.

Would be strange if Lukaku ended up playing for Mourinho given it wasn't that long ago that he didn't want him

The reason they gave for stopping their pursuit was that Ibra's injury means that their priority needs to change to getting an out-and-out striker. Hints quite strongly at Lukaku, although they've been linked with guys like Belotti too.

I'm not hugely keen on Lukaku but as replacements for Ibra go there's not really a better option. I'd be happy enough if we did sign him, although it's a big step down from Griezmann. His habit of racking up goals against **** teams would have been really handy this season. And I guess he could improve on the stuff that makes me sceptical of him.

I still wouldn't take United's season over Spurs'.

Didn't help Spurs.

Spurs' European performance was properly embarassing. Even allowing for Monaco being better than everyone realised, they still had a piss easy group and they didn't exactly come up against a big team in the Europa.
