Always felt that one trick ponies that are at least effective at that trick are better than those who promise everything and deliver nothing.

Yea would much rather have Townsend in the squad than Walcott, Ox or Wilshere. They've done absolutely nothing for England other than the odd flash. Townsend has always performed well for England.
Wilshere has done okay for England, in the end stop looking at him in an Arsenal shirt.

Just confirmation bias from you though isn't it? between you and what they said on MOTD2 probably the truth.
Meh, there's no law of nature stating that the truth is always in the middle of anything. What did they say on MOTD?

Danny Murphy was eulogizing, thought it was OTT, showed a fair few instances when he actually did the opposite of what you said.

He has but I wouldn't take him this summer given he has been out so long. Still think he will go though.
Hodgson has pretty much said that he goes if fit.

He puts a lot of stock in what people have done for him in the past. Players like Wilshere, Townsend, Wellbeck have done well for him and he values that over their club form. Which is a reasonable enough approach as long as you're not ignoring obvious breakout stars like Alli, Kane, Vardy - which he doesn't seem to be doing.

I think that's fair sometimes. The team clicked a bit with Wilshere in the deeper role, so it's fair to take that into consideration, but with Townsend it just so happened that he was wearing an England shirt when a few of his many hopeful long shots flew in.

But then he is actually playing really well for Newcastle, and guys like Sterling and Walcott aren't performing, so there's an argument for taking him anyway.

I think you're downplaying his overall performances in those games for England, but agree with the general point on both sides of the coin.

Yeah possibly, but he was always pretty good at that other stuff for Spurs, just with zero end product. I still think he's a really good prospect fwiw.

Sterling hasn't had a good season but i'd certainly take him ahead of Townsend. Now if you said Townsend over Walcott then that is a better discussion.

Seems like it is bad news for Welbeck, usually in these things if it is good news it is announced very quickly. Guess that means we go with Kane, Vardy, Rooney and Sturridge as the strikers and possibly pick one more man who can play wide instead of an extra water carrier.

Injury for Oxlade-Chamberlain probably makes Walcott a banker I should thought.

Not that he necessarily should be, but I can't see him being left out.

Not an huge fan of Walcott, but can see his value as an impact sub. Woy is going to go with Carroll though, so if it's Townsend or Walcott, then Townsend every time.

If one of Kane, Vardy, Sturridge or Rooney goes down (and let's face it, one of them probably will, knowing England's record with injuries and important players) I think we can rest assured Carroll will go.

4 strikers for a team that basically plays 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 is overkill.

Kane, Vardy, Sturridge and Rooney is fine, particularly if you're also taking Sterling.

Also if you're taking Walcott too, there's rumours that he can play as a striker and a winger.
