I might be being a bit harsh on City here, they are playing high quality oppo after all, but on all the occasions I have watched them over the last year or so it's struck me that they really are a team that is dependent on a handful of individuals (as an Arsenal supporter I obviously can't really bag on them too much for this but...). Apart from Yaya, Aguero and Silva their entire team is basically made up of players that are serviceable but do not really have any x-factor, if you'll pardon that rather trite expression. I like Zabaleta a lot too tbf, but Nasri is just the ultimate Cinderella player, Clichy is absolutely terrible (anyone just see that cross he just attempted?), Kompany is seriously suspect, Dzeko is nothing special, Fernando is crap, everyone knows what Milner is about etc... Every time I watch them their tactics basically seem to be either 1) give the ball to Aguero/Yaya and they will do something good; or 2) give the ball to Silva and he will do something amazing/give it to Aguero/Yaya.

The narrative that is trotted out frequently is that City don't have the CL experience to get the job done at this level, but I just don't buy it. To me it seems a more plausible explanation is that their team is primarily made up of players who aren't crap, but are pretty middle of the road for the most part, and just aren't good enough to get it done against top oppo. Arsenal in disguise, in other words.
I think it's a fair enough assessment, but I think the real story is much simpler. They were playing a team with Messi, Neymar and Suarez up front.

The problem for English clubs is that the very best players invariably want to play somewhere else. They basically need to get really lucky to compete.

Btw, I've fully converted to the "it's not three numbers listed above the City lineups fault that they do badly in Europe" crowd. It's like some people in the English media still haven't watched Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Two out of three ain't bad. Saurez's finishing really is top drawer, and I'd settle for a decline that looked like Messi's performance last night.
I still think Neymar is criminally over-rated though. Ditto their right-back, fwiw.

And I do think that Pellegrini got his selection wrong. Playing both of Dzeko and Aguerro up-front effectively left them a man short in midfield in a match where they simply couldn't afford to be outnumbered. End result was that Dzeko seemed to spend most of the night on the left wing, which was always going to be a waste of time. Plus he was a complete donkey when chances did come his way, so he really didn't bring anything to the side at all.

Tactics aside, I don't think Dzeko should ever really start for Citeh. Apart from just not being good enough, Jovetic/Silva/Nasri at 10 would suit Aguero much better.

Neymar's had a pretty ridiculous season. I think you could argue that he's worse than Aguero and, at a stretch, Alexis Sanchez. But he's definitely better than everyone else in England.

Russell Crowe interested in buying yer Dirties, apparently.

Started following them under Revie when they almost literally assaulted anything that moved, according to the Beeb.

Can see how they appealed to the tyro Russ.

Dzeko is a Giroud level striker IMO. Decent, but CL against Barca isn't really his level.

I used to think Neymar was overrated, because he'd done so little in Europe. But really he's completely finished that argument this season. Non penalty goal rate in La Liga on a par with Ronaldo.

I think Giroud is a bit better, but I might just be reading too much into current form. He definitely complements Arsenal's system better than Dzeko does Citeh, though.

I don't care about the domestic competitions anymore tbh. What can we do in those to suggest we're on the up. Besides, it's not like I realistically expect us to win at Old Trafford.
