Yeah, I think the second point is where the disagreement lies, and I think we'll have to agree to disagree. Maybe I've been brainwashed by Arsenal, but I prefer longer term sustainability.
There's a happy medium IMO.

I don't think van Persie will work out as an overall success for Manchester United but in the immediate short term there's no doubt that van Persie signing for United was a significant part in them winning the league (as well as a significant factor in Arsenal - yet again - not mounting a challenge), so it was worth it from a short term point of view. Longer term is more interesting because I think an under-appreciated skill in management is figuring out when you've had the best out of a player and then robbing someone else blind for doing so. Wenger's actually really good at it (see Vieira and Henry, as well as probably van Persie), where he's been weaker in the last 10 years is successfully replacing the players he's correctly identified as being a wee bit past it.

On the topic of absolute beatings being dished out in big games, I think a reason for it is because of the disparity between attacking ability and defending ability at the top level, so when momentum goes against you in a game, it really goes against you. A lot of the beatings that we see aren't consistent "goals spaced out over the 90 minutes" where a team is just manifestly superior. Teams get blitzkreiged, conceded 2 or 3 in a really short space of time then just get done. Liverpool v Arsenal last season the perfect example - Liverpool score in the first minute, Suarez hits the post a couple of minutes later then the momentum just turns brutally against Arsenal to the extent that it's 20 minutes in, Liverpool are 4-0 up, and you still haven't quite figured out just what the **** is going on.

I was actually just about to type that Liverpool might just have averted the killer momentum swing in this game but Real scored their 3rd as I was typing, so hopefully they'll cop a big one.

Thing is Liverpool could well still go through if they win their next two non Real matches
Might only need to win one and draw other depending on the Ludogorets v Basle results.

You would fancy Madrid to win all 6 matches even with half a team after qualifying.
