I don't understand. I'm under no illusions as to how badly he's regressed this past two seasons, but even so, that sounds like a phenomenal deal to me. £20m for a player that single-handedly wins you the title in his first season? I'd be all over that.
Yep, the title must be worth at least that for United, and he was truly incredible that season.

It's the wages over a period of 4 years that are the stinker tbh.
Even with that it's still a great deal IMHO, admittedly ATM, LVG probably would prefer the wages going elsewhere, but it's the least of United problems.

Yeah, this. It's too naive to just look at the straight up fee. For example, this says RVP is on 250k a week, which means it costs about £13 million a year on wages. So it's more like £72 million for one league title and three years of averageness.

It would've been much better to say, try and pay £60 million for someone like Lewanwoski, who is in the same category, will give you years of performance, and potentially on slightly cheaper wages (he was on €20k a week in 2012).

It probably is the least of Utd's problems, but a £200k p/w long term contract for a player who's largely pretty cack would not represent good business sense for any side, even one like Utd who can probably absorb the costs and so on.

While I appreciate that Taarabt's body language is almost always terrible, by all accounts he actually works hard in training and enjoys being challenged. Was extremely unprofessional from Redknapp - classic deflect imo.

Hey you can totally speculate that doing a different deal would have been even better. Who knows whether a Lewandowski deal was possible, or how it would have worked out?

You're trying to say that if Arsenal could sign someone tomorrow who would win them the league in their first season, for £20m+50m wages over four years, you'd say "nah that's a **** deal". It just really, really isn't.

I don't know tbh. Certainly when you take the emotion out of it it doesn't seem a good deal but I admit at Arsenal there wouldn't be much complaining. The dynamics of the clubs are a bit different though. 2012 Manchester United were still regularly winning titles and had more pull for attracting players than 2014 Arsenal. Arsenal winning the league now would have benefits beyond the in the moment joy and immediate prize money. Not sure you can say Untied winning the league in 2013 had any long lasting repercussions, other than Fergie retiring and everything going **** up.

I'm convinced this stuff (big matches being stupidly one sided) is happening more these days. Could just be that there are more matches though.
Bayern have been ****ing incredible tonight. The constant interchanging of positions between players has really been something.

Alaba as an overlapping centre half has been brilliant.
I think these two are related. Modern top-class football is about making spaces by a lot of movement, which means defenders need to keep 100 % on their toes, keep their structure, wits about them etc, to combat this. This neutralises itself most of the time but if you suddenly get a couple of goals in the face the difference between the teams gets inflated quickly.

Also top clubs/teams play with a certain pride in being top clubs (unless coached by Mourinho), don't park the bus, try to keep possession etc, so leave space to be exploited when the structure of the team collapses.

The above is why, even at our worst, we always enjoyed success against Arsenal. So many teams look to defend first against us, and hope to exploit our weak defence. A tactic very effective under Moyes, where we would pass sideways 25-30 yards out as we lacked any creativity to break through, before losing it. However Arsenal will always look to play correctly and attack teams as their first mentality, which suited us ideally as we could hit them quickly on the break - basically do to Arsenal what lesser clubs did to us. Fergie always knew to use this against Arsenal, and would usually recall Park to make the most of the need for a quick, untiring player to force the breaks.

Its probably one of the reasons I've softened to Arsenal over the years is the philosophy of playing to their strengths rather than take caution, and having the self belief to see it through.

How do you feel about the Ozil deal? Surely in comparison it's been an unmitigated disaster.
