Is it much of a risk though? If he goes it'll be for a fee well below his actual value, regardless of who he goes to. By rejecting other bids the only thing at stake will be whatever the difference is between Arsenal's £3m release clause offer, and a (possibly) slightly higher bid from someone else. Unless I got the feeling that his heart was more or less exclusively set on rejoining Arsenal it's a risk I would take if I were Sociedad.
Well that's where they negotiate. I'd say the chance of him not leaving this window is basically 0 if Arsenal have already triggered the clause, as rumoured. If they can get double what Arsenal are willing to pay elsewhere (which I think they could quite easily do), then it'd be worth it for them, surely?

Well, yeah. That's essentially what I was getting at earlier though. It depends if he's really set on joining Arsenal or just wants out of Sociedad. If it's the latter then yeah, they should take what they can get. But if his interest to moving to clubs other than Arsenal is only low to moderate then it might not be a good idea to let them come in, and dangle high wages in front of his face, when they'd conceivably have a good chance him staying with them quite happily.

Would not Arsenal have some kind first refusal thing anyway?

He has been really good the last couple of years so makes a lot of sense.

That would only mean Sociedad have to accept an Arsenal bid of a certain amount though. It wouldn't preclude them from accepting a bid from elsewhere.

Yeah but first refusal means that if (for example) Liverpool threw in a bid for Vela, Sociedad then have to tell Arsenal and offer him for the same price.

Translation: it means **** all. Even more (less?) so in this case given Arsenal will have a bid accepted at a lower price than everyone else.

Haha, yeah, unless someone has a bid of less than £3m accepted, or whatever Arsenal's agreed buy back price is, Arsenal having first refusal is basically irrelevant.

Yeah ridiculous, deserved for the stupid stutter though.

Was hoping this was going to pens, been reading Twelve Yards all week, bound to get some more this summer of course.

The issue is match officials have set a precedent by not punishing jumping off the line in the past. Every goalkeeper does it, it just only becomes really noticeable when they do it to a greater extent like tonight. But then, where do you set the parameters?

I'd be absolutely over the moon if United signed him. Although he has mostly been used as a number 10 lately he is a gun in midfield as well.

EDIT: Not that I think we will sign him ftr.

It's a clear breach of the rules that officials are ignoring. You wouldn't let a striker put the ball down 2 yards in front of the penalty spot. The penalty should have been retaken and the goalkeeper booked.

What do folks think of Rakitic? Could he make it in the Premier League?
Easily yes. Would be a great but for your lot actually.

Does make me wonder how Croatia were so bad at the end of qualifying when they have him and Modric, two of the very best players in la liga this season.

*sighs*

Greg Dyke @FA Chairman on Commission findings: "We're good with players up until 17/18, The biggest problem is getting into the first team"

So they're all clearly brilliant but the evil forn coaches don't pick 'em. Just utter nonsense.

I wonder what "We're good with players up to 17/18" even means to be honest.
Well it appears to be because he's asked the present coaches, and they tell him the kids are great. No vested interest there of course. Doesn't really actually stack up at all if you look at age-group results for England teams but nevermind. Getting these players to play cloggers in the 5th division will sort it all out, no doubt.
