Norwood's on Fire
Stam and Van der Sar were hardly ongoing sagas.

There are loads of examples of the opposite in any case. Ronaldo, Kleberson, Smalling, Hernandez, Nani, Anderson, Park, Djemba-Djemba off the top of my head. I suppose they just do a good job of keeping it quiet when they're trying to pick a star out of nowhere, but however much truth is in it my general memory of United signings is of them coming as a bit of a surprise. Certainly compared to the signings of other sides in any case.
Hmm, Van Der Sar had been linked with United for years.

You're right about all of them but I wouldn't call any of them big signings.

Not that it matters, I'm just argumentative

I wish a few of those had stayed quiet TBH.

Especially in England, there are so many rumours of transfers and other football-related gossips, most of it turns out as total bullsh*t later. Today, I read three different news articles about Fabregas and a possible transfer to Barcelona. One board member of Arsenal allegedly said that Cesc wouldn't be good enough for Barca- I think many things are just made up by the yellowpress so that they've got something to write.

Big name signings don't always work.
You can say that about anything. Scoring three goals doesn't always work. Positive expected value though. You're generally more likely to win something if you sign a top-class player for 30 million pounds than you are if you don't.

Was Peter Hill-Wood.
Fact is that Barca haven't approached Arsenal, so the original story that the deal would be done by the weekend is laughable, as is the fact Barca feel they should get some sort of discount because Cesc used to play for their Academy.

So... ah Liverpool? Looks like Rafa will stay on AND we'll probably lose Torres AND Gerrard AND we're not looking at buying anyone. Great.

Haha, one of the worst rumours I've read is that Arsenal are going to sign Stevie-G if we sell Fabrilliant.

We wern't trying to sign him for years, actually passed up the chance when he left Juve....

Basically the press saw we had **** keepers, saw Van Der Sar was good, so guessed at it for years untill we did make an approach....

This. Being linked with means nothing as any decent player gets linked with the big clubs. Unless it comes out of the clubs you wouldn't be sure there were attempts at Benzema, Robben and Essien.

There were definate attempts at all 3, Robben even got shown round OT IIRC.

I'll be keeping my eye out for potential summer signings... Utd always put them up in the Lowry Hotel whilst they 'discuss' (tap up) terms.... our office is next to it, have to walk past the front doors every day. I'll let you know who I see (though Mancini currently lives there, so could be visiting him instead.... Seen the scarfed twunt a few times.... ALWAYS wearing a scarf. I kid you not)

If you don't understand it, what chance do the rest of us stand?
Ah right. Bad on my part there.

Was asking if he didn't get my point which was really unless it comes out via a club or player or something it's not worth mulling over.
