Nah I've been watching Werder Bremen at home to Valencia which has been an even more incredible game - can someone explain to me why we have a foreign game on ITV rather than Fulham? Is it rights related?
Maybe, as Channel 5 are showing Liverpool vs Lille now.

Yeah as much as Gerrard should have been punished it's not the FA's fault, and it definitely isn't because Gerrard is English. After all, as social pointed out, they gave Rio 4 when they were just about to appoint him as their new captain.

Aye, Alan Shearer allegedly had to threaten to quit as captain before they let him off booting Lennon in the head.

Yeh, the ref missed Rio's. There is no Gerrard/Liverpool bias. In fact, had they did something for Gerrard the irony would be that they'd been inconsistent.

As for Benitez being a poor man-manager. He is, and there are enough examples to point to. He uses the same hands-off approach to all players but he is too stubborn in his ways to acknowledge it doesn't work for everybody. Gerrard and Carra have also said how Benitez doesn't talk to players one on one about anything other than football and how they would yearn for a simple pat on the back. I recall a Gerrard interview where he said that if he had done pretty much 99/100 things right Rafa would be on his back for that 1 thing he did wrong. This same approach is why we lost Xabi, and even Pennant although that's not much of a loss. It's why Babel has been on/off because he doesn't know whether he is coming or going. Riera probably got benched because lord forbid he probably took a man on or tried a trick on the pitch instead of running himself into the ground like Kuyt.

You in the anti-Rafa camp now?

LOL, not really. Still defend his record and spending, etc, but have always had a problem with his man management. He's like the opposite of Mourinho or Hiddink in that he rarely comes out with lavish praise and he rarely has trust for players who haven't proven themselves to a considerable extent. I feel sorry for some of the youth prospects, who are quality - credit to Rafa for overhauling the youth system - but will take an age to convince Rafa they have what it takes.

Would you like him to stay or go at the end of the season if you do/don't get 4th?

Sadly, I could name most of the 1971 squad in that picture.
fwiw can anyone name the guy between Wilson & Kennedy in the back row, and the one between McLintock & Armstrong in the front row?

Pretty sure the big blonde guy between Bob & Ray is John Roberts, our Welsh wizard.

Not sure about the guy between Frank & Geordie (RIP :() tho.

If we do get 4th keep him for another season. If we don't, it depends who'd we be able to get. As much as I dislike Mourinho as a personality, I think he'd spur the likes of Gerrard and Torres to an even higher plane and give the team the confidence to think for themselves. My dream replacement would be Hiddink but that can't happen anymore.

Having said all that; what Rafa has done, if you analyse it properly, is quite remarkable and we will always be indebted to him. But if he can't get 4th or can't win a major title next year then I think with the players he has given us another manager may be better.

I think the latter guy might be John Samuels, but I'm far from 100% sure.

I hadn't heard about Armstrong's demise - a recent affair?

No, must be 7 or 8 years ago now. Maybe longer. Collapsed on our training ground.

In another life I actually processed his widow's claim for Widow's Benefit.

A rare claim to fame, I suppose.

The squad pictured on the previous page must have been before your time though?

EDIT
Just checked - Armstrong died towards the end of 2000.

I remember it pretty well. tbh I never liked them at the time - no real reason, but I quite liked Leeds and was gutted when they kept missing out. The one Arsenal player I did like at the time was Ray Kennedy, which turned out to be pretty fair judgement for an 11 year old. Eventually another sad tale of course, but he was one heck of a player.

It's FIFA's rule, the FA's hands are tied. When that Morgan **** from Sheffield United committed attempted murder on Iain Hume, the ref gave it a yellow. As such, the FA could not give any further punishments - FIFA actually stepped in to make sure of it. The **** should have gone to jail.

I presume in Rio's case the referee missed it?
Yep, my bad
