La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Roma's director of sport Daniele Prade, was in London to watch Arsenal play Porto, to assess Emmanuel Eboue and Nicklas Bendtner, but their dream signing would be Thomas Vermaelen. William Gallas was sounded out because he becomes a free agent in the summer, but he is 30 and earns too much for Roma's liking.

People bag out the Italian league so much, but considering three Italians manage EPL clubs, an Italian manages your national football team, and countless players have come from and/or played in Italy also play in the EPL, as well as MU who poach a lot of Italian kids (not that I think they should be able to, but that is a different topic), suggests it all can't be that bad over in Italy.

The other thing is, if Inter is meant to be over rated, what is Real Madrid?
How does Italian's playing/managing etc abroad have any relation to the quality of the league in Italy?

There are 3 scottish managers in the Premier league...does that mean that the Scottish league is as good as Serie A?

Yeh, but is the Scottish team world champions? Are their players amongst the best in the world? etc, etc.

It's fair to say that Italy's league is suffering, but Craig has a bit of a point.

Again, the 3 managers comment is mute, agree with the remark about 3 Scottish managers, and lets face it, which are the more successful?

How many real top class Italians play in England? Aquilani? Cutting the mustard well here that one. Only really him and Rossi playing outside Italy ATM. Rest are either journeymen footballers signed because they are cheaper than journeymen from England, many of these are just doing the rounds of Europe, Italy being just one stop.

Utd not really poached a lot of Italian kids, no more than we've poached from France or the arse end of Africa/Norway, and no worse than the Italians nicking other nations kids themselves (or the French raiding their old colonies in Africa). Only two I can think of are Macheda and Petrucci (and lets face it, only know his name from FM). Could add Rossi to that list in recent years, when you realise he's from that little province of Italy they call New Jersey.

End of the day, its a fair while since an Italian player or manager made an impact on domestic English football (so we've got an Italian coach, would he have got the job if Alex Ferguson had thrown his hat into the ring? Wenger? Don't think so. Does this make them 2nd to Sweden in manager stakes as Ericsson did it first?), and a while since an Italian team did OK against a decent English team (having said that, would back Inter to do Chelsea, wishful thinking but worth a punt)

Paolo di Canio still the best Italian player to have graced the Premiership, followed by Carbone. Pretty much shows the standard of Italians that come to the EPL. Good, but not Serie A standard/argumentative.

Even though I love Paolo, I think Zola may have something to say about that:unsure:

Well, this comment gets one massive DWTA from me.

Edit: Grecian beats me to it.

Others have beaten me to it, but Zola's up there with Bergkamp & Cantona in the best ever foreign Prem player stakes IMHO. di Canio had great technique, but too much of a loon to be consistently good.

Have Vialli & Ravanelli ahead of the unloveable fascist too.

Vialli never showed his best in the Premiership though. Di Canio's after Zola for me.

Who remembers Stefano Eranio? He was quality.

Haha, Christ. The amount of times i've expressed my love for Zola as well.... :(

Vialli was pretty old when he came to the Prem (similar to Gullit). Ravanelli was a gun. Know Eranio played for Derby as well but actually can't picture him playing. Best cult foreigner Derby had is easily Kinkladze however.

Fab was a one season wonder wasn't he?

Di Canio was class for many seasons at Wednesday and the Irons. His assists as well as goals was at an incredible ratio for often struggling teams. Ravinelli was just a goal-scav, not remotely comparable IMHO. Di Matteo ahead of the grey bloke too, also by miles.

Ah Kinkladze's actually one of Citeh's loveable foreigners though.

Neither come close to Marian Pahars.
