It's the 'best fans in the world' thing that gets my goat, in 91-92 when we played them in the league (Div 2, old money) I'm sure there were less than 20,000 there. Don't get me wrong 15-20,000 is a decent enough attendance for that level of football, But the likes of Leeds, Citeh, Forest and even Leicester got higher crowds than that one division lower. This suggests that many people started match going because the team is successful. If that's what you want to do, fine, but you've no right to claim to be the best fans in the world.

Granted, at its lowest it often manages to stay above the top flight average, but it's all relative and I think the sharp rise from when Keegan returned in 92 shows you that they are nothing but a glory-hunting bunch of morons with stupid accents

Pretty sure the capacity in 91 was the same as it was in 95

edit, looked it up and tbf they expanded in 93, but it was by no means full in 91-92

I have to say I'm glad UEFA is going after Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa after the way they behaved in the CL Semi Final leg at Stamford Bridge. If I had it my way I would make the actions of Drogba, Bosingwa and Michael Ballack all recieved a red card by the ref. Really if you come in harsh then I think the players will cut out their crap and get on with the game.

In rugby if there is a dodgy call you don't see half the team crowding around the ref or one of them chasing after the ref or acting like a complete and utter wanker (like Drogba) as the final whistle went. If the refis going to lay down the law to a captain or a player, they stand there, listen to what the official has to say and get on with it.

They expanded again at the start of this century as well, which the reason for the other major increase. They have basically averaged full crowds since the start of the Premier League.

Haha you and my Dad would get on rather well I think. He is a massive rugby fan and says nearly that exact statement word-for-word whenever he is watching football on the TV and footballers surround the ref. Agree totally FTR.

The fact that they have kept turning up this season, even though they have played like crap, says something about there current fans. Yeah maybe the had little support base prior to coming into the PL. But i don't see what their fans were like 20 years ago, has anything to do with their current fans.

Well to start, their crowds have declined this season. And basically my point is that they are constantly lauded as a club who have the best, most loyal fans in the country. Loads of these fans who are there 'week in week out' now were old enough to be there when they were in the old second but chose not to be. Fine, your perogative, but don't then claim to be something you're not.

Man City got 30,000+ regularly in the third, and that's in a city with two clubs, one of whom are, you know, pretty successful. They are just one example as to why it's tosh that the geordies are anything special as fans. We'll see how much their attendances drop off next season when they are playing Peterborough.

BTW, when the whites went down in 01, our crowds went up the next season, now that's hardcore

Gillingham promoted from league 2 after beating Shrewsbury. Didn't look a great side when I saw them a few weeks back, certainly not as good as Bury but thats the way the play-offs work.

The only fans who moan about them are those who support teams who come third but can't get through them and that's just a pathetic whinge

............. mind you it's completely different when you have a season when there is only one automatic place into the premiership thus the runners-up have to go into the play offs - that is totally unfair, a complete f***ing lottery and contrary to the rules of natural justice, supporters human rights and the gut reaction of right minded football supporters everywhere
