*Official* English Football Season 2008-2009

Tom Halsey

International Coach
Away at Anfield was a big game for sure, and he won it with probably the only shot on target Chelsea managed to make (it didn't qualify as a chance, half-volleying from 25 yards with your wrong foot while on the turn). You're also ignoring the fact that he's likely to score less goals against big clubs because they're harder to score against. Can you find a player with a better record in big games than him? Man Utd certainly don't have one. William Gallas is the only one i can think of from the big four.

The other thing to consider is what he brings to the team. For me he's the world's number one target man. Chelsea know that if they're under pressure they can hoof the ball up the pitch and there's a fair chance Drogba will win the ball or a free kick. There's noone in the world who can do it as well while regularly scoring 20+ goals a season if fit, and that's why he's indispensable to Chelsea. Scolari may not like the fact that they're reliant on such a tit, but he should learn from Ferguson and bite his tongue in order to keep his best attacking player.
Actually yeah you're right over the Liverpool game, for some reason I had the impression that the goal he scored v them was in 05/06 when they ran away with the league, forgot it was at the start of 06/07, yeah, big game, fair call.

The reason Man Utd don't have a striker who scores as many goals as him in big games (I assume that's what you mean by record) is because we don't have an out and out goalscorer, or indeed anyone like Drogba, so comparisons here are fairly irrelevant IMO. There are quite a few strikers who I'd have thought (without checking) have scored a fair few more goals per game in big games than Drogba.

I agree he brings a lot to the team when he can be arsed, but he can't be arsed quite a lot IMO.

Fair enough, wouldn't agree though, i think he just sometimes just looks like he can't be arsed more than anything. Off the pitch he's fickle, but on the pitch he's pretty committed, moreso than say, Ruud Van Nistelrooy or Nicholas Anelka (but less so than players like Rooney or Tevez). If you remember, Jose Mourinho gave the amount of ground he covers as the reason he continued to pick him over Hernan Crespo.

If he leaves Chelsea in January, i'll be absolutely thrilled.

Should be getting down to my first game back on saturday against Leyton Orient...hopefully we can continue our promotion challenge, should beat Orient anyway. 10 Quid in as well, must be in celebration of the return of their most popular fan.

It wasn't aimed at you, more just thinking about the prospect of concentrating on the league
