I think you're being a bit tight on Carrick, even though the comparison was a shocker
Mediocre is perhaps a bit strong, but...carrick doesnt really excel at anything in particular, his passing is his biggest asset and he does pass the ball well, but by no means exceptionally, his tackling is nothing to shout about, and neither is the rest of his game, his work rate isnt particularly high, and significantly less than other players that play in his position, a very ordinary footballer for me.

How is Evra going to replace Giggs? He is a defender and Giggs is an atacking midfealder. I know Evra can play on the left wing but he is in no way going to be an adequate replacment for Giggs especialy as Giggs play a lot in centre midfeald these days.
Giggs was playing in the centre because of injuries. He's now a winger again. Evra looks much better offensively than defensively and while there won't ever be another to replace Giggs, Evra may just be adequate. Not world class but very good.

France Football magazine has released the top 50 nominations for their coveted Ballon D'Or European Player of the Year award.

2006 France Football Ballon D'Or nominees
Michael Ballack, Gianluigi Buffon, Tim Cahill, Fabio Cannavaro, Andriy Shevchenko, Joe Cole, Gregory Coupet, Cris, Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Mahamadou Diarra, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Samuel Eto'o, Cesc Fabregas, William Gallas, Gennaro Gattuso, Steven Gerrard, Ludovic Giuly, Fabio Grosso, Thierry Henry, Juninho, Kaka, Miroslav Klose, Philipp Lahm, Frank Lampard, Jens Lehmann, Claude Makelele, Florent Malouda, Edison Mendez, Lionel Messi, Andrea Pirlo, Lukas Podolski, Carles Puyol, Franck Ribery, Ronaldinho, Juan Roman Riquelme, Arjen Robben, Wayne Rooney, ***** Sagnol, Bastian Schweinsteiger, John Terry, Lilian Thuram, Tiago, Luca Toni, Fernando Torres, Patrick Vieira, David Villa, Gianluca Zambrotta, Zinedine Zidane.

I was most impressed to see Tim Cahill's name mentioned in the top 50, imo it's due reward for his efforts in the Aust. WC campaign, and his fantastic start to this season in the EPL.

Would be interested to hear the views of those who follow the other Euro leagues closer than I, do you think that Cahill deserves his spot among the elite ??

The first one's not a fact. A bit more coaxing and they'll sell.
Look, the Bayern CEO even threatened to put FIFA on Man Utd because of aggressive dealing. I don't think he'll change his mind that quickly.

Any chance of a brief description of Cris, Mahamadou Diarra, Gennaro Gattuso & Ludovic Giuly? Names that do not ring any bells to me :)

Just noticed that Grosso is in there.... didn't know diving was in the criteria

imo Xabi Alonso was probably a little hard done by, but then i'm going on last seasons form... how has he been performing this year ? I haven't heard much about him

Cris = generally rubbish Brazilian central defender. Tall, gangly, not much positional sense.

Mahamadou Diarra = like Patrick Vieira, but not as good.

Gennaro Gattuso = AC Milan's midfield machine. Can run for days on end and adds more bite to the midfield than a snake on crack.

Ludovic Giuly = talented winger/striker/playmaker who was recently dropped from the France side. Quick, skilful, creative, scores goals.

As you can see from the other names these awards are all generally reputation based and it is basically just nominate everyone from a big club. Barcelona, Chelsea and Lyon fairly prominent from a quick scan at that list of nominees. Cahill and Edison Mendez are the only left field nominations. I guess WC performances had to kick in once they started to struggle to fill the spots, I mean 50 nominees, seriously.

Chelsea to win today.

And you're censoring *****? This is bordering on ridiculous.I don't think there's anyone in the world who would be offended by that word.

It'll be an utter farce if Beaverinho wins it. He's been woeful when it mattered like in the CL final & the World Cup. Cannavaro should be nailed on.

Lehmann outside chance of top three IMHO; might be interesting to see what odds one can get.

Ridiculous all this.

I reported a spammer yesterday (and I reported his mate weeks ago) who are only here to sell bloody t-shirts and neither have been banned.

I can only deduce that the Mods are getting a slice of the cake.

These spammers only come in, post once and leave - banning would do nothing.

Viz reporting posts: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages... etc.

What's the point of reporting it if no-one can be bothered to act upon it. If spammers aren't to be banned in future the reporting function needs to be updated/edited to:

"This is ONLY to be used to report problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts."

Clearly they're all too busy playing nanny, searching posts for the word p00 et al.

I won't bother to report the bounders in future, at any rate.
