So why not keep Joe Cole on then, he's just as good at taking them on!
Except most of the time he cuts infield just as the full back wants, into the congested part of the field and into 2-3 defenders who inevitably win the ball back.

If Steve Bruce played today, he'd still find it hard to get into the England team. For the last 20 years or so, England has been really strong in the CD department. But you could guarantee that Sven would have at least brought him on in a friendly amongst the mass substitutions to earn at the very least a single cap.
You know that Terry Fenwick played less than 20 years ago dont you?

Make a list off the top of your head of Central Defenders who would slot into any team, in the last 20 years.

Butcher, Adams, Campbell, Terry, Ferdinand at the very least. And i've not even put much thought into it.

At his peak, Gary Pallister was a hell of a player.

So was David May. Shame his peak lasted about 15 minutes against Porto in the CL around about March 1997 (pretty sure he was on the England bench not long after that, against Mexico i think. Another fine bench warming achievement from the big ginge)

So how many centre midfielders do you want to play at once then if you want all 4 of those to have a shot as well as Lampard? 8-)
I think you are missing my point here, England have a few friendlies along with the Euro 2008 qualifiers, all i'm saying is that along with O'Neil probably getting a chance in England colours in the centre mid-filed role i wont mind seeing Nolan, Reo-coker or Barton in that role either.

Isn't Taylor playing left back all the time though?
I think i saw him play left-midfield a few times, but yea most of the time its left back.

Excellent by Norwegian standards.

So are Charlie Miller and Robbie Winters (Dundee Utd and Aberdeen rejects with 2 caps for Scotland between them)
Oh right, I wondered because Arsenal are interested in him (according to goal.com) and Lyn said he will be sold if the price is right.

As for Stewart Downing and Joe Cole, how about in a meaningless friendly, and towards the game, switch Cole to the right side of midfield and play Downing on the left and see how that works?

Not sure how many friendlies there actually are, with these 7 team groups there's a lot of qualifiers that have to be fitted into a period of about 15-16 months, but putting players in for a meaningless game against opposition who won't be trying that hard won't tell you anything about them. It'll also make it more difficult for the first choice team to get any sort of rapport going.

I'm surprised nobody had mentioned it but with Chris Kirkland now making his England debut, his dad Eddie now can hand in the betting slip which the book makers gave his 100-1 odds of ever getting a cap and with £100 placed down, he now can collect a cool £10,000.

Meanwhile in the transfer rumour world, Jens Lehmann is of the opinion that there is 'no chance' that Ashley Cole will be at Arsenal in the near future while Real Madrid are looking at closing in Diarra and Reyes. Diarra really wants to go and is considering not turning up to training or heading off to Mali and just staying there.

If I were in charge and I couldn't get away with not paying his wages as punnishment (well he shouldn't since he is not fullfilling his obligations to his employers), I would say 'fine don't bother to turn up until the rest of your contract is up' and then he is free to leave, but which point nobody would want him. I would look at ways to stuff him over more (like if he turned up to the training ground, arrange him to be arrested for tresspassing etc.).

Taylor is a good all round left-sided player no doubt wont mind seeing him in England colours along the left wing as back-up to Cole & Downing.
why bother? wayne bridge is a far better player in pretty much every regard.

gary o'neil?!! you have to be joking...
How much have you seen of him? I've been watching him regularly for five years now and he's made of the right stuff. Dragged a poor side out of the mire several times as captain last season, scored goals, made goals, and bossed the midfield against supposedly better players.

Coventry City got 250k as well.

Plus Piscine, you're clearly wrong.

I suppose for Coventry that was a very welcome 250k. I guess in League One or Two that would be enough transfer money for a season or so?

That's the sort of sparkling argument I'd expect from someone who disagrees with me. Why do we want someone who cuts infield all the time, kills the width, congests midfield and the forward line when we've got a 6' 7"ish forward who's by far our main goal threat over the past year or so? Downing is a more effective wide left midfielder than Joe Cole.

Scaly your right that Downing is more naturally suited to the left-side role than Cole for England, but even so Cole for the last 2 years now has been extremely good there & has become one of the best in the world in this role & really doesn't deserve to be dropped.

Cov aren't in League 1/2, they are in the Championship. I thought I better point this out before Marc gets here and is incensed by your comments! But, £250k is nonetheless highly appreciated by any club outside the top flight
