Just back from Hove where I managed to catch the first 2 sessions before I had to repair to London to bathe the baby and apply aftersun to my sunburnt face.

Interesting team selections by both teams. On a pitch tinged with a bit of green, both sides decided to play left-arm spinners in Keedy and t'other Tom Smith.

Chapple and particularly Anderson bowled well with the new ball, but were unable to make an early breakthrough in slightly hazy conditions which later gave way to glorious sunshine for the rest of the day. Chris Nash never looked like he'd hang around for too long and was dismissed for 23. Mike Yardy ground his way to 17 by lunch in partnership with debutant Ed Joyce who was much more fluent.

Pre-season reports have suggested that Saj Mahmood has discovered an ability to bowl with accuracy and consistency. It cannot have been Saj Mahmood, therefore, that came on first change to bowl perhaps the worst spell of fast bowling I've seen in recent years. He was comically bad, totally unthreatening save for the possibility that he might accidentally produce a yorker at random which might surprise a batsman accustomed to a hopeless mixture of misdirected deliveries well wide of either side of the wicket.

Anderson however bowled with pace and his second spell was even better than his first. Tom Smith (Lancs) bowled steadily but didn't look particularly threatening.

Yardy's gusty but ugly effort eventually ended after lunch. Goodwin got out cheaply, running the ball off the face of the bat to be superbly caught by Ashwell Prince at 3rd slip. Prior got out to a truly hideous waft to a rising ball outside off stump. Luke Wright, batting 2 places too high at number 6, looked like a number 11 on amphetamines and was lucky to survive till tea. I see that he was dismissed shortly after I left. Joyce and RMJ then steadied the ship and batted to the close.

Along with Anderson, Ed Joyce was the player of the day. He is in with a chance of a debut hundred tomorrow and he was by far Sussex's best player. Although he doesn't look to dominate the bowling, and lost his fluency altogether for a period just after lunch, he looks a player of real class. Potentially a great signing by Sussex, and potentially a great move for him to reawaken his career.

Thanks for the report Zaremba, good to see that Jimmy bowled well. They were suggesting on sky that it was hard work for the bowlers apart from early swing. That suggests that Jimmy and Chapples spells in the morning will be critical, if we can get an early breakthrough or two we could knock you over for around 300-320 but if not it could be a long day again. We need to limit you really because regardless of the pitch, if we are facing a large total the chances our we will collapse like a pack of cards with our batting line up.

Whats the rest of the Sussex lower order like, have heard a few comments from Sussex fans to the effect the tail is quite long? Maybe its wishful thinking on my part!

Aga and Collymore are rabbity but Damien Wright has a FC hundred for Tassie (and 16 other fifties) and Tom Smith averaged 50+ for Sussex II last year... so you've a job to do yet.

The rest of the Sussex order is best described as untested. All I know about Damien Wright is his stats from cricinfo (FC average of 24.5). Tom Smith and Aga can both bat a bit. Collymore can't. So I wouldn't say it's a long tail in that sense. The length of the tail has more to do with the fact that we have only 5 specialist batsmen and Luke Wright at 6. Overall I'd say that we can't be confident that our tail will score any runs, and you shouldn't be confident that they won't

If I was comparing the teams I'd say that the teams are similarly (un)balanced, both being short of a specialist batsman and with 4 seamers plus one spinner. The batting is comparable but Lanky plainly have the better bowlers.

Anyhow I agree with you that early breakthroughs will be important tomorrow, because Joyce and RMJ both certainly can bat, and the match is pretty finely balanced. As I mentioned in my previous post it was very sunny for most of today but hazy early on and if conditions are similar tomorrow I'd expect the ball to swing early on and then do not a great deal. The pitch has a greenish tinge and there's a little bit of uneven bounce but other than that there's not much there for the bowlers. There's also a short square boundary on one side. I'd guess that 300 is the minimum score needed to be competitive.

Saj is probably in for his batting - he got 90 odd against Sussex a couple of years back

You're welcome.

BTW I should add that a few posters on the sussex messageboard whose views I respect seem to hold a much more charitable opinion of Saj's bowling today than I do.

With Freddie replacing Saj, that would be a truly outstanding bowling line-up, particularly when Jimmy is in world-beater mode.

RTD 5-65 was quite a surprise, what wasn't was Masters figures of 16-8-16-3. He really is invaluable for Essex on these early season tracks with a bit of nip about. Essex certainly had the better of the day, but these game can still be swung Gloucester's way should they start brightly tomorrow. Interestingly poised, hoping young Jaik Mickleburgh can come through for Essex.

Lancs and Sussex shared the honurs it seems, thanks to the current partnership of 87 between Joyce and Martin-Jenkins. I also think Joyce will be an excellent acquisition for Sussex adding some much needed solidity at number 3. Good to see Jimmy A starting the season well. Saw his delivery that removed a bewildered Mike Powell on Sunday, big inswinger at good pace, the off stump certainly completed a good number of cartwheels!

Northants skipper Nicky Boje leading by example, against a pretty average Kent attack. Although the Northants batting line-up you would not think is riddled with quality.

Notts v Worcester looks interesting although Notts clearly having the better of the first day. Big guns Samit Patel, Adam Voges and Chris Read all making decent contributions, also an attacking line-up selected from Notts, backing the batsmen to do their job and going with 5 specialist bowlers with players such as Swann, Broad, Ealham, and Adams, all capable of getting some useful runs down the order. Really fancy Notts to land the CC title this season. Worcester overseas Ashley Noffke endured a fruitless day, going wicketless in his 18 overs (0-47).

Was interested to read that John Dyson didn't think a gerat deal about the Grace Road pitch on the opening day. Would that be because it was not completely dead, offering absolutely nothing for the bowlers and their batsmen were made to work a little harder for their runs ??? Unthinkable.
They did comeback well on day 2 in terms of their batting, Simmons and Nash getting a few runs under their belts.

RTD wasn't a surprise. He's captain of my fantasy cricket team

I'm hoping for some decent weather next week so i can get down for a bit of the Lancs match. Student memberships are so cheap they're paid off after about 4 days of cricket so i might get one of those if i can be bothered.

Yes but he's peaked too soon with the ball, no chance he'll get another CC five-for this season, and his points don't count yet do they ?

Must admit, eyeing a bit of a day off next week myself to watch Lancs v Notts, weather pending. As I said earlier, think it's a very strong Notts side, so would like to make it down for a day, or even half a day. Any idea if admission is cheaper if you turn up at lunch ?

Probably not, I wouldn't think so anyway. Hence the membership looks all the more appealing since i can dander in and out as i please. Problem is, i'll be in Belfast for most of the summer and the one ****ing game i most wanted to see is in ****ing Liverpool.

Yeah. It's just after my exams end, so i wanted to head down and unwind for a few days before shooting over the Irish sea. The fact that the team i support are playing is a bonus.

Nothing doing though.

Do you get to see any of those games in Stormont? I went to a FP trophy game there at it was a lovely place to watch cricket. They gave you a plastic chair as you went through the gate and you just went and sat on the boundary. And everyone was so friendly, I was on my own and quite a few people came up and said hello to me and chatted.

Cheers Dave, thanks to you mentioning that I've landed a couple of freebies for the opening day, and booked the day off work. Sweet.

I'd seen that advertisement on the opening page of the Lancs website, but never took the time to read it cos you never get anything for free, or so I thought. Lesson learnt.
