Yes, I agree it is unlikely they will go outside of the players that are contracted generally. However, there are 7 batsmen with central contracts and one of those is Trescothick, whose international future appears unsure. A couple of batters out of nick and you never know, Smiths consistency may be rewarded. He is at a good age at 29, should know his game and would need less settling in period than throwing a youngster in.

Still, there are probably the likes of Shah, Key, etc ahead of him.
I don't think it's terribly likely Smith will ever play a Test again, TBH - he's a bit unfortunate, certainly, as he's had a better career than most, though with him apparently opening all the time it cuts his options as there are many openers in the frame.

However, if crisis happened this summer and we had 4 or 5 batsmen out, I'd honestly prefer Mark Butcher to be recalled, a better player who's had a far more raw deal than Smith.

Guess the season proper begins on Friday.

Lancashire are playing two OD games against Durham, yesterday and today. Both sides were missing plenty of players (but Lancs are hardly going to see much of Murali, Hodge, Flintoff, Anderson and Mahmood anytime soon - even when England go out im sure there will be a rest period - Keedy was also missing whilst Durham were missing Harmison, Onions, Collingwood and Plunkett).

Anyway Lancashire won the first game by 21 runs with Loye scoring 80 and my spies report Smith was impressive with the ball (2-35 with some dropped catches). Otis Gibson was Durham's best bowler and Mustard top scored with the bat.

Also something else that has happened is that they have introduced appeals against umpiring decisions in the 50 over comp. Link
I have no time for these sort of "improvements", it reeks to much of American behaviour. They are taking away the human factor from umpiring and trying to replace it with technology which I feel is a mistake. The respect for umpires will be greatly diminished.

I like Ed Smith and I think he was unlucky to represent England on only a few occasions. His consistency in the domestic game is impressive, and he's not even 30 yet. What chances of him getting another chance for England ?
Precisely zero, he's not an international standard player and the only reason he got given a go in 2003 was because of his freakishly good form in the CC that year.

I agree, i think this system is nothing more than a compromise for the safety of the umpires careers, i think we should either go the whole hogg and leave the umpire in complete charge if and when he wants to use the technology avalible to him or not at all.

I was saying that yesterday. People are going to accuse umpires diminishing thier position in the game. Whats the point of having perfect decisions? human error makes for better viewing IMO

What's the point in having perfect decisions? That's like asking what's the point in trying to cure cancer.

Bad decisions do not make the game any better to watch, an umpire making a wrong decision is more frustrating than entertaining, i watch cricket for the skill and the competition, not to see an umpire give a batsman out when it clearly pitched 3 miles outside leg.

A decent revovery after James Kirtley took the first wicket of the season in the first over of the season.

He was photographed at Canterbury using sandpaper on the ball in an attempt to obtain reverse swing.

Hahahah!

Does nobody go for kent in england or something haha... I think i will have to change clubs though i only backed kent because of matty dennington but he got released from the club. They hardly gave the bloke a chance. but oh well.. I was thinking of coming to england to play come cricket during our winter seasons. What are some of the clubs I should be looking at to get a game.. In like 3rd grade or something like that.
