Five cheap Worcester wickets for Hoggy! He must be about the only England regular who takes enough wickets in county cricket to qualify for the end-of-season averages.
i'll wager Harmison will take enough as well, especially now he's retired from ODIs...

The CricInfo proper list simply lists anyone who's bowled. And IMO that's much the best way, not using one of these "cut-offs".
So you'd rather some declaration bowler with 0.1-0-4-1 finishes top than someone who bowls regularly and takes for example 15 wickets @ 17?

just wonder if those figures could actually happen!!!

lets think...Ball one is a wide, and the batsman is stumped, ball two goes for 3 and the innings ends:)

That sort of thing can and does happen all the time, and it annoys the hell out of me.

Most seasons there are 3 or 4 - sometimes more - batsmen who take 1 for single-figures\teens in the only game all season they bowl in.

And yes, they do count in the averages... it just depends on what the compiling merchant can be bothered with. In a book, clearly it's a waste of paper and money to list everyone who's bowled - on an online database (like CricInfo or CricketArchive) it's not.

Indeed, but it's strange that someone like that could just appear out of nowhere. He's, what, 26, and had been playing Minor Counties cricket for an age, then had an awful first First-Class season.
It does happen - Martin Saggers played for Norfolk for a while, before moving to Durham, where he wasn't the greatest. It wasn't until he arrived at Kent that he started consistently bowling well.

Yeah - great signing. Not sure how long he's around for, but he's going to be lethal in typical early season conditions like they've had over the last few days. Warne and Clarke are a pretty good overseas pairing if you ask me. I don't think anybody can match that.

Well, It's interesting at Chester-le-Street, Kent playing for the draw, overcast conditions with rain always a possibility. Can Durham grab the win? Harmison getting Jaarsveld and particularly Key early is encouraging...I just hope the rain stays away and gives us the best possible chance for a result (from Durham's point of view)

Yorkshire are so gun it's unbelievable, were hammering Worcs, and I mean hammering them. Rashid, Rudolph and Gillespie are all gun.

I would say that the draw is the likely result, given Kent's strength in depth (they bat down to 10) but a few more wickets and it's squeaky bum time. Denly's just hit Onions for 6 so he's not exactly blocking and playing out time by the looks of things.

Credit to Durham, they're played a very good game, but their bowling will look much weaker once Harmison goes, particularly if Plunkett joins him, which is a definite possibility.

Edit: Great, Walker gone for 1. Need Denly to see this through, and if Stevens and/or Jones want to find some form, now would be an excellent time.

Yorkshire are looking in excellent shape - they'll miss Hoggard of course but all their other bowlers have taken wickets, and Younis Khan and Jacques Rudolph look like two very shrewd signings. Could be surprise contenders for the Championship on this form.

Worcestershire, on the other hand, look dreadful, and it's tempting to write them off already. They just don't look like they can cut it in Div 1 with journeymen like Moores, Sillence and Malik.

Yeah, it's a problem for Durham, they've had good early form, but take Harmison, Plunkett, Collingwood (and a very outside chance of Onions for the 1 dayers) and they're going to struggle a bit more (all the more reason to try and push for the win here and get as many early points as possible). Hopefully with Harmy retired from the one day team we might see a bit more of him at Durham though.

That's true, hadn't thought of that. I haven't seen any of Onions' bowling, but on the strength of his performance against Kent, I shouldn't think he'd be nearly ready for the international side yet? Doesn't seem to be as potent so far this season as he was last year. He got Key, but infact that's the only Kentish wicket so far that hasn't been snared by Harmy or Plunkett.

Di Venuto's a great signing though, I reckon he'll score bucketloads of runs this season.

Onions has been steady so far this season, but not outstanding yet. I certainly think he'll take plenty of wickets this year, but i don't think he's quite ready for international duty yet (although if it's a choice between him and mahmood, i'd take him every time). From Durham's point of view I hope he gets to play plenty of matches and is allowed to improve more before he enters the England arena.

Di Venuto's been outstanding so far, 528 runs in 6 innings in the 4 day game. He's not scored quite as well in the FP trophy (our top scorer in that is our wicketkeeper Mustard who opens the innings) but he's certainly going to be an important part of our season.

EDIT: and this game's looking more and more like a draw. Denly's doing well, and looking at the weather, the rain's held off, but it's overcast and it'll get dark earlier than it has the first 3 days and Kent will be quick to take any offer of Bad Light

if he gets anywhere near the one day team then we will know nothing has changed with moores in charge. godleman meanwhile hit 80 today versus notts, have only seen him play once, but people who have followed him reckon he's a dead cert future england international.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if bad light comes into play, although you're closer than me so you'll know better! Denly's done a good job, he's made a good start to the season. It'd be interesting to see what would have happened if there hadn't been any interruption from the weather over the last few days, although I'm sure Durham would have batted on.

Still, a draw with maximum bonus points will probably suit both teams well enough, especially considering the fact that two other games have barely got going. Yorkshire have done very well for themselves in this round of matches.

Well, i'm just up the hill from the ground and it's certainly got darker over the last half hour.

I'm just looking at the table, Kent and Durham will be on 36 points leapfroging Sussex. Lancashire will be on 37 or 38 (getting a draw, 1 batting point, 2 bowling points at the moment, but if they bowl Hampshire out they'll get their 3rd) Hampshire currently on 38 (draw, no batting points yet, 3 bowling). So if my calculations are correct positions 4,5 & 6 will be seperated by just 1 or 2 points, with 3rd place Hampshire not many more points ahead....it's all bunching up in the midfield
