Personally I don't think there's any real way we can tell who the back-ups are at this stage - if someone gets an injury and someone else get's a chance they might a) cement a place or b) fail miserably and then fall out of contention.
So would you agree with that squad I had or not?

If you want spin cover, you've already got Pietersen and Vaughan - they're just as likely to be as effective as Batty (who lets face it didn't really cause that many problems when he played in helpful conditions!)

Well, there's the best part of a whole english summer to go yet. Pietersen's doing 'all right', no more. There might be another 2 or 3 names to force their way in yet.

Too early to say yet - the lad Mahmood has been hyped, so he may come into it, and if there's an injury in the middle order now, someone else would come in and they might then "do a Strauss" and make themselves undroppable!

dont get too excited about strauss just yet.....he still has a long way to go before he proves himself to be test match standard.....might just be another FTB.

Probable: Chris Read or some other 'keeper.
highly unlikely that anybody else will come into contention other than read.

Probable: Gareth Batty or some other spinner.
gareth batty is out of the equation IMO......

Decide: James Anderson or Martin Saggers.
doubt saggers will be in contention so it will probably be between anderson and mahmood or both(depending on mahmoods ODI performances)

Yes, but when he came in and played those knocks it was impossible to drop him.

If we have a similar injury in the next series and someone like Key or Bell comes in and does a similar type of thing, then it'll be impossible to drop them, and Pietersen will drop down the list.

IMO Mahmood's contention into the Test squad should be based on his FC performances.
If he comes into the ODI and does very well, then as long as he performs adequately (say average below 30) in CC I'd put him in contention.

If he's woeful in the ODIs and then averages 20 in the CC, I'd be less keen to take him.

well we are though to the Semi-final a great performance from Worcester to beat a Plucky Essex Side, i never thought that 207 was a bg target and Essex would get this easy. But excellent late bowling from Batty, Kabir, Bichel, Leatherdale and Hall altough Mason bowled well

Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well i'm going to Old Trafford tommorow to see Anderson, Law and Co. destroy the inbreds from accross the border so i'll get another look at Mahmood's progress(its also on sky btw). It's a shame Flintoff is ruled out through injury though.

If you think Leatherdale bowled well you must have watched a diff game to me! I could almost kill him when he kept bowling length balls and getting smacked for 4/6..JUST BOWL IT FULL GOD DAMMIT!

To be fair he was always a good county performer but never international standard. Although i believe it was a crying shame that Stuart Lampitt never got ALOT of games for England, he was a very very good one day bowler.

Hmm, how did Leatherdale not play for England?

Could it be the fact that over 16 seasons he's bowled an average of just over 2 and a half overs a game in One Dayers for Worcestershire?

And it's not as if he's a red hot batsman either 8-)

Now let me see. Leatherdale, debut 1988. Career spanning a time when Dougie Brown and Matthew Fleming played for England. Leatherdale clearly picked the wrong colour ball out of the bag or something, since they were obviously picking players at random.

Cheers,

Mike
