Agreed but we would have taken this score at the start of play. In a good position and if we bat for an hour after tea then the rate we are going at means we will have a very good lead by then.

DW, 2 of England's 3 best batsmen are at the crease with the third yet to come. Should score another 100 from here easily.

Crying shame that Root has batting this well from (effectively) no.3 and it won't show up on the stats.

Just play the best batsman there. It's not ideal, but neither is overthinking it.

He has the Dean Elgars about him when it comes to his bat face closing though. The rest is fine for an English technique I guess.

This English test side is one of my most favorite teams of any era. There are only couple of world class cricketers in the side in Root and Anderson yet there is enough quality that you can still leave out Broad, Bairstow or Woakes.

A telling match winning contribution can come from any of the 11 blokes in the side and they are usually very good in a crunch situation and have blokes that can provide a piece of magic or raise their game at big moments.

They will not go down in history as one of the great test teams but they have been one of the most entertaining test sides from any era and have made test cricket a cant miss product whenever they are playing, which i believe is a very significant contribution to test cricket when everyone talks of its demise against the shorter formats.

Brilliant session for us that. In a good position now and another hour of batting will give us a total that will be very tough to chase down.
