Not a fan of this referral system at the minute. That session was particularly stop and start. The other thing supposedly in its favour is it gives you more correct decisions, but does it ? Who's to say that Harmison should not have been given that wicket ? There wasn't conclusive evidence to overrule the umpires initial decision, as Goughy said, and Hawkeye predicts it was hitting the stump. The rule should be amended,to ultimately give the correct decision.

Add to the fact that with England only having one more left to use, they will be wary when to use it, had Broad's LBW shout on Sarwan been referred, would that have been given out ? As it is, strictly speaking I suppose it was out, not out was given, so it was conceivably another wrong decision.

Tony Hill isn't sure if he's coming or going with his decisions being overturned, he must be losing a bit of confidence in his decision making.

This referral system is there to overrule blatant wrong decisions, not borderline ones. Therefore a wrong call should be met with a more suitable punishment. For example if a batsman knows he has not hit it, he calls for the third umpire, it is quickly overruled, as it is a blatant mistake, and we move on. Should they choose to go for a third referral and it is unsuccessful, ie they are trying it on a little, something like a 30 run penalty should be awarded, just a thought ?

I agree with most of this post - the referral system needs to be fine tuned quite a bit more before it's gonna be effective.

But 30 runs? That's gonna be half the innings score for some matches in NZ.

Well that was an interesting session from an England POV

Sidebottom bowled one of the more toothless opening spells you will see. Economical but never threatening and bowling in the wrong areas

Flintoff was probably the pick and as usual the game bristles with energy when he is involved.

Harmison bowled very well and hit the splice and most importantly forced the batsmen to play everything

Broad was all over the place. Its hard to see what he brings. Lacks the accuracy of Sidebottom to make up for the lack of penetration.

Panesar didnt realy bowl enough to make comments. There was encouragement but only a bit.

It may be excessive mate, but the referrals should only be used when its obvious, so they will rarely be penalised. I was just putting it out there.

Monica "Seles" Panesar just looked so miserable after that 6. The guy wears his emotions on his sleeve.

Pretty tepid stuff from England after tea, going through the motions at the moment, rather hoping that WI will throw their wickets away. Still 2 wickets to get before we even get Chanders to the crease.

Yep these two are everything that's wrong with English cricket, ATM. I'm getting fairly depressed about it, to be fair. We've no chance against the Aussies.

I don't like to write off English bowlers, particularly if they're young, but enoughs enough :(

Striving for swing, perhaps the right move considering he is just medium pace and the pitch is quite slow.
