It also represents a good investment for when Vaughan decides that he's no good at this one-day stuff and that if England are to win the World Cup he'll have to drop himself.

I didn't say he was.
You're contradicting yourself :)

Why not?

When Vaughan goes, it'll need an experienced person with a good Cricketing brain to take over.

I see no-one else of around Flintoff's age at this stage who will fulfill the first criteria of being an automatic pick.
But has had he any captaincy experience before this game?

And if they decide Read is their man to keep for England, then he might be a consderation, he is just as experienced as Flintoff, except he hasnt played as much ODI and Test cricket because he had Stewart in front of him.

I wouldn't necessarily say he is "no good" - his record is not that bad.
It still need's improvment though an avrage of 30 is not good enough for a number 3 batsman IMO.

I cant see him getting it over 35 ether.

A One Day warm up in Bangladesh earlier this winter - not sure about earlier in his career.

Small point, but how is he just as experienced then?!

This is in addition to Kirtley remaining on tour!

No Johnson though, but the way English fast bowlers seem to drop when on tour he should have his bags packed.

Who next? Kabir Ali? Recall for Dazzler?!

Why? He's already in Sri Lanka.

Cheers,

Mike

For some reason, you know what, I really hope so. Think he was sold short in the summer by not being given enough time to get in to the flow of 5 day cricket again. Bring back that smile, that's what I say.

I think he was about as penetrative as Graham Thorpe in those games.. no spring, no bounce, no zest, no use.

Quote from Vaughan:

"Rikki playing is another option and he has definitely got a chance. Who is to say that he may not end up opening the bowling?"

Worst. Opening. Bowler. Ever. ?

Maybe, unless Blessing Mahwire has opened for Zimbabwe....

At least Khaled Mahmud gets it to move around a bit...

Its sad that this should come from a team who are supposed to be capable of mixing it with the big boys...

By the amount of FC cricket, he is perhaps unlucky not to have played more international cricket.

Some how I dont think Mr Jayasuriya, Mr Attaptu and co will be shaking in their boots.

Apprantly England may consider the 3 prong spin attack! Croft, Giles and Batty!

Yes.
A bold claim indeed.

I would bring to the court's attention one Ehteshamuddin of Pakistan, who opened the bowling for them at Headingley in 1983.

I would also question whether Clarke is really worse than one SM Gavaskar, who used to open India's bowling quite regularly in the 1970s.

Cheers,

Mike

Interestingly enough, Gavaskar opened the bowling exactly twice (2-0-7-0 and 4-1-10-0) in that decade. He never opened the bowling again.
