Congratulations to England, they deserved to win. Their bowling has been amazing all winter. I think the most impressive thing is not necessarily the wicket taking ability, which you expect to be decent, but the way that the attack controlled the run flow when they werent taking wickets. At no point this winter have either Pakistan or SL got away. The only really big partnernship I can think of was the Azhar/Younis one in the 3rd test and even that one was very slow and wickets fell extremely quickly either side of it. Easy to say SL missed a trick by batting too slow, but hard to take on an attack which bowls so consistently and accurately. Batsman wise England still have massive issues imo. This SL attack is poor and was even worse in this test match (with Welegedera out). Herath was the only test quality bowler in the attack. I believe the the bowlers have consistently proved they can handle any batting lineup in any conditions, I still feel the batting wont cope against quality bowling (ie SA this summer). At the same time I expect SA to struggle with the England bowling and I have a feeling that the English tail with Bresnan, Broad and Swann may be the difference for that series.
For SL good performance considering their schedule and recent form. However there were some big disappointments. I'm not worried about Sangakkara/Dilshan, they have long term records to show that they can perform and you cant expect the whole line up to be in form continuosly. I always think you need 6 batsman who have the proven ability to score runs, and expect 4 of them at least to be in form. SL were set back by having Thirimanne who effectively meant they were playing 5 batsmen. They have to find a way to replace Thirimanne with Chandimal, maybe Mathews opening the only way.
The biggest worry is the bowling. While I knew Prasad and Lakmal wouldnt do anything and arent test standard, I had hopes that Randiv could cause problems and make SL into a 2 man attack at least in home conditions. He had a terrible game and even though Im not a kneejerk type of fan, I think this could be it for him. Even in home conditions with a line up struggling for form and confidence, he was completely ineffective. It's disappointing when you compare it to the damage caused by both Herath and Swann (who bowled to better players of spin). It's even more disappointing when you consider that Dilshan outbowled Randiv and looked a bigger threat. Not sure where SL go from here with the 2nd spinner. Right now we are a 1 man attack at home and a 0 man attack away. I'm not asking to go from this to a world beating attack, but there is a real need to make some sort of improvement here, and find another bowler who is at least capable of averaging 35ish. Not sure why Kulasekera doesnt play ahead of Lakmal/Prasad.
