***Official*** England in Sri Lanka 2012

Set up for an Australian style grind from Cook and Trott tomorrow.

I'm willing to cut Strauss some slack for his innings - it's exactly the type of innings he could get away with playing in the last Ashes.

Didn't Strauss deliberately play really, really aggressively last Ashes to try and hit the bowlers off their lengths early on?

Excellent day. Bat like non-tools tomorrow and we'll be around 150 ahead, hopefully nipping one of their out just before the close. Feeling confident.

That isn't how numbers work.
No need for a declaration tomorrow if we bat properly.

Yes, but the pitch is hardly going to get better, and having to chase around 200 in the 4th innings would be quite tricky. Therefore, I reckon if Sri Lanka had a 50 run deficit and could get near to 300 on a 3rd/4th day pitch, chasing 200-250 on a 5th day pitch would be difficult. Especially after watching us try and chase down 140 odd at Abu Dhabi.

Only in Sydney. He scored fairly quickly in Brisbane and Melbourne but that just told you more about the bowling on offer.

Only managed to watched bits of today but it's been a very good day's cricket by England, the bowlers did what they've been doing all winter and then our openers put on a 122 run partnership, couldn't ask much more tbh.

The test will be tomorrow but there's been no demons in the pitch and seeing the openers put on such a good stand must give the team huge confidence. Ideally we need to bat long and bat once and put the pressure back on to SL.

Yes we were ****e that day but we have shown on a couple of occasions this winter that we can manage around the 250/60 mark in the 4th inings, not that I'd won't to go there again.

As I remember it he just played every ball on its merit and the bowling was so bad that that's what it looked like.

True, but I think there's quite a big difference between getting there when your chasing over 300 and chasing it down when there's that little extra pressure of the victory in sight. We obviously have the ability to chase reasonably big scores down, but with the pressure of having to get there, I wouldn't hold my breath.

It was interesting to note that Jimmy who's been bowling all winter in these conditions, was operating at his normal pace of around 135kph whereas Finn and Bres struggled to bowl anything like their normal speed. Bres didn't get much out of the high 120's and Finn was bowling around the same pace as Jimmy, just goes to show how much it takes to get used to the heat and conditions down there.

Just watching the highlights. Had a quiet chuckle that Cook brought up the 100 with a reverse swept four.

It's weird tho, before the UAE tour I'd have thought we were totally in the box seat. Now, however...

Yes an excellent day for England but after recent events a big first innings lead cannot be taken for granted. Cook and Strauss worked very hard today, kept risk-taking to a minimum and were willing to remain patient and run plenty despite the stifling heat. They found the gaps better than I've seen in the sub-continent, and Trott continued to do what he does in his unflappable manner.

First job was to finish the Sri Lankan batting off, it may taken a few overs, but tight bowling and discipline the key again. SL could never get away this morning or on the first day and so should a cluster of wickets fall we were always going to be in pole position. Of course this slow pitch has played its part, but once again our bowlers have been outstanding.

Let's hope the batsmen can finally play their part to the full tomorrow.

England were great on day 2. They were sensible against Herath and if he's not taking wickets, Sri Lanka are always going to struggle in these conditions.

Been easily the best batting display of a miserable winter. About bloody time too. If they lose this match from here then the bowlers should be allowed to tar and feather the batsmen and make them do a walk of shame into the barmy army pub at the end of the tour.

Something so secure about watching Trott and Cook bat together, lose a wicket and with KP coming in you have no idea what to expect.

England should win from here, Bresnan is playing, coincidence?
