He got the axe from the ODI team, was picked for the Tests.
Right you are, Saj Mahmood his replacement . Hardly fills anyone with confidence does he. Why is Plunkett not in the ODI format, he was a very good ODI player, far better at onedays than test.

Err no he isn't. He's an awful limited overs player because he bowls extremely expensive spells.

In FC cricket he's still expensive at times but if you take wickets like he does then it's not a problem. Bowling 4-5 overs for 40 in OD cricket, which he does regularly is disastrous. In FC cricket he has good games where he'll completely destroy batting lineups whilst everyone else does nothing, whilst still adding runs and so on otherwise.

Who Saj or Plunkett? Because Plunkett IMPO still has a little credibility based on what he did against Australia in the Commonwealth series.

How long ago? Players develop, Plunkett had a good year last season and in all fairness was pretty close to the front of the line once the selectors made the decision not to take Harmison.

Test Side
Cook

Trott

Collingwood
Prior
Broad

Sidebottom

Maybe Plunkett in for Sidebottom? I don't think Wright gives us enough of a threat with the ball.

ODI Side
Strauss
Denly
Trott

Morgan
Prior
Broad
Swann
Bresnan/Onions
Anderson

Wouldn't be all that surprised if Trott missed out for Wright. Unless the selectors actually recognise the fact Trott is more than useful for a few overs if need be. Surely Davies will be kept with the team after the Test matches?

Erm I was saying Plunkett is ahead of Saj. Saj is an enigma, extremely quick on his day but perhaps unfairly branded the New Harmison but in a way quite true, he has yet to find his mentor who can bring him alive in international cricket. Both potential assets for England though.

Plunkett.

He's too erratic for ODIs. He'll have good days obviously but he'll have a lot more bad ones where he gets carted.

Mahmood on the other hand is just ****.

Actually not that disappointed with the squads. Would have given Bresnan the test slot ahead of Plunkett, and probably included the extra opener instead of Bell as I reckon we'll go with 5 batsmen and then Prior-Broad-Swann at 6-7-8. Don't see a lot wrong with picking Wright as he's probably not going to play, at least at first. Pleased with Davies being included as well, again unlikely to play barring injury but will learn more from being on a test tour than Jones or Foster would have.

Would have ditched Prior in the ODI squad though in favour of Foster, and would have preferred to see anyone rather than Saj.

WTF is Wright doing near the test side my god. Some of the worst selectorial blunders the selectors have made in years.

Plunkett has been hopeless this season in OD cricket for Durham.

If any other young English quick had returned the OD figures that Mahmood has this season, there would be a clamour for him to be in the side. Mahmood might prove to be a complete waste of space, but through performance he has more than earned his place in the side.

FC batting average of 49 with 3 centuries in 10 matches this summer, and averaged 76 on the Lions tour last winter. Plus he's shown that he has a certain amount of temperament when playing ODIs. Plus the bowling adds a certain amount of value.

I've seen enough of Wright to believe he might have what it takes - might equally be flattering to deceive of course but there's only one way to find out, and Dusty & Co have obviously decided they want to know

They're his season stats, there's nothing sarcastic about that.
So you don't think based on what you have seen of Wright ODIs, that those FC performances is more of indictment of our FC system - rather than any potential ability Wright has currently or wi ever have to be considered a test quality prospect?.

His selection is just as dumb as when Rikki Clarke was chosen in 2003/04 in the test side. That selection panel needs revamping immediately.

You do realise players can be genuinely better at one form of the game than another?

Nope. I don't buy the 'indictment of the county game' any time England aren't playing well. I quite like what I've seen of Wright in ODIs in terms of his temperament and ability. In so far as his FC county performances go, I can only go on stats as I haven't seen Sussex play.

Haa, come on fellas stop living in denial. You clearly know that Wright has no use in the test side, you will save yourselves alot of energy but simply admitting this.

Yeah, personally I wouldn't have him in my XI but I don't think you're giving him as much credit as he deserves in terms of his ability as a FC player.
