*Official* England in South Africa Thread

If I made it sound like I was saying that, it was not so. What I said was that Hayden was the only proven quality player of spin in the side.
Sorry, but what about Martyn, who had also proven himself as a quality player of spin.

Except he hadn't - he'd scored one very lucky 163 in Sri Lanka, and otherwise had done little almost every time he'd faced spin on a turner. The one exception was the 100 in the second-innings at, IIRR, Galle.

Whoever renamed this should be ashamed of themselves.
The naming of The D'Oliveira Trophy is a credit to cricket and I don't doubt next summer's thread will be "*Official* Ashes Thread", so this really should have been named after the trophy, too.
At very least you could have a compromise - something like D'Olivera Trophy (SA-Eng) Thread.

Well now I feel terrible that I'm not ashamed of myself. I renamed it because it seemed few people were recognizing it as the Official thread for the particular tour. Not sure why you've picked this thread to gripe though, as most tour threads aren't titled with the trophy being played for.

I don't see the need to change it back, but if some other kindhearted mod does, far be it from me to gripe. Be my guest.

What's the situation regarding Andre Nel and his chances of playing against England? I know he was injured.

maybe people were ignoring the thread cos we're currently on the Zim tour and this wasnt sticky?

hate to agree with richard for once but there you go :)

Bring back Nicky Boje, or even Paul Adams.

Andrew Hall has to be in there as well, probably slot to number 5 or 6. De Bruyn will probably play at some point.

Er, people were opening up new threads to discuss the topic.

Am not sure if it was a question of ignoring the thread. It was a bit before its time if I may say so. :)

The name is fine and no one need be ashamed of it just like no one need be proud of griping about it :p

I shall now insist that next summer's thread be titled *Official* Australia in England.
I gave my reasons why I picked this thread to gripe - I feel the naming of the trophy is very symbolic in cricket (whereas all other trophies, apart from The Wisden Trophy, are named after sponsors or former players whose prowess on the field is their only claim to fame) and I feel CricketWeb should honour this by naming it's *Official* tour thread after the Trophy.

Agreed, if some people don't know what is what in terms of the respective trophy name then it is a good excuse to read a bit of history of the game!!

Probably at some point!?!?!?!?!
He should have been in the team for the last 4 years, if they waste any more chances they're practically criminal.
It seems to me that Hall will open the batting in The First Test. However I have extreme doubts as to his ability on South African wickets in Tests.

Certainly should be fit (he's already playing South African domestic cricket) - whether he's going to get a chance to start bowling well I'm not sure.

Line-ups on track ATM:
Smith
Hall
Rudolph
Kallis
Dippenaar
Amla
De Bruyn
Boucher (hopefully)
Pollock
?
Ntini

Trescothick
Strauss
Butcher
Vaughan
Thorpe
Flintoff
Jones
Giles
Hoggard
Anderson
Harmison

Certainly there can't be too much doubt about the England side - Amla and Dippenaar aren't certain of their places, hopefully Tselokile won't play (and if Boucher does hopefully the break will have been the kick-up-the-ar*e he apparently needed).
Don't see any reason why Cullinan would be available but if he were I'd pick him ahead of Rudolph, Dippenaar and Amla.
The final place might well be taken by Nico Boje, but if the pitch doesn't turn he and Giles will both be as redundant as normal.
Be good to get this final Zimbabwe ODI outta the way, hopefully without any mishap, then get on with the real stuff.

And if the mods disagree, then theey'll call it the Ashes thread.

And if you complain, it will show exactly how sad you are.

Or rather it'll show-up their lack of empathy for one of the most poignant pieces of naming in cricket.
