Safe to say that it could have been much worse from 211/6.

Our batting has problems but one way or another we've not been dismissed for under 300 in the series which is not to be **** on

Wouldn't put too much blame on the batsmen this game. More on bowlers and fielding (and losing another toss) - 475 was way above par. Shame because SA are now knackered.
This. Admittedly I'm relying on cricinfo, but only Taylor seemed to be really culpable for his dismissal today, with the others being undone by fine bowling on a helpful wicket.
If we'd bowled and caught properly, not only would be have been facing a far smaller SA total, but we'd have been batting for an extra couple of hours before the pitch started to play up & down.

Still time in the second innings ....

Perhaps worth adding that this is one of Moeen's better innings lately, which is good to see.

Yeah our bowling and catching was ****, but thing is our bowling has won us so many games over the last 18 months that on occasion the batting has to step up and win games and it never does. Replying to 475 on a wicket which if you bat properly you can score runs on isn't some insurmountable task. We should have easily got past 400 this innings if players (Hales, Taylor, Woakes) didn't throw it away with poor shots. Just hope we can get the lead down below 100 then take a few quick scalps.

Always going to get people 'throwing it away' with poor shots though.

This match is just basically an accumulation of small factors stacking against England. Winning the toss was important and adds 50-100 runs to the equation. South Africa picked a better side than usual, England picked Woakes and an out of form Anderson. South Africa have more to play for.

I agree with Nasser, people are overdoing the whole Rabada workload thing. If you have to rest him for ODI cricket that is fine, the WC is years away he has time to get experience. Also 6 months till their next Test match.

It is a poor shot from Broad but not going to blame him. Top order should have scored enough runs. Hope Moeen has a proper go now.

Sums up our overall performance in this test. I know it's a dead rubber, but our default setting should be better than what we've seen over the last two and a half days.
Hopefully Bayliss will rip into them over this.

And one of them is Morkel the biggest fraud in test cricket today as well.
He reminds me of Andy Caddick. He shows up when conditions are in his favour and the opponents are out of sorts or just not very good, but otherwise he's hanging on to the coat-tails of more whole-hearted performers.

Quality ODI bowler, but as test bowler while no mug, nowhere close to how as good as some have said. Rabada in his second test series has totally overshadowed him.
