Not at all.

He is nowhere near the bowler Giles is, and his batting (supposedly his strong point) hasn't been a success.

Lol all he would have to do to match Giles is bowl negatively and go for less than 3 an over.

Assuming you're talking Tests here, but he can't get remotely close to that.

Erm, because throughout his career he's not been able to ever to that role even in County cricket?
Blackwell often comes on when he's on a hiding to nothing for Somerset - Somerset are rubbish and they play on one of the best batting tracks in county cricket, however Blackwell had an ER of 3.05 in county cricket in the season just gone. Only Langeveldt in Somerset's side got anywhere near that with 2.96, the rest are all 3.46 or higher.

Well isn't that great.

He also took 28 wickets @ 56.03 in 17 games when bowling more overs than any other Somerset bowler.

Giles in 4 (early season) games took 24 @ 18.54...

Giles has 140 wickets @ 39.60 in Tests, so wicket taking averages in county cricket aren't that reliable. And since the argument is whether Blackwell can do Giles' job of tying up an end anyway...

i don't agree with the tying up an end business anymore,England's seamers are now far more capable and have the ability to keep the runs down and take wickets rendering Giles useless unless he improves.

I don't think he's all that bad and should be dropped but i'm sick of people saying Giles is good for tying down an end up because he's not and he doesn't need to be. The only reason Giles is in the team is to give the attack variation.

When Pakistan tour England next year it should be another interesting series with the quicker pitches and England will be looking for revenge........the Twenty20 should be very exciting aswell!

TBH Giles' figures are so poor is because of his negative tactics. He should go around the wicket more, even give the ball a bit of flight. He's not helping himself, or his teammates, by not taking wickets but being content with going for 2.5 an over.

If he can't be consistent with England's attacking philosophy then IMO he shouldn't be in the team.

Giles got a few LBWs going around the wicket when England toured South Africa a year ago. He should definitely do it more often.

I'm looking forward to it myself - always love the series against Pakistan because the sides are usually pretty well matched (and the crowds are fantastic).

Regarding the Twenty20 - wow! A shoot-out between Afridi and Razzaq against Flintoff and Pietersen with all four in form - a mouth-watering prospect.

How's about a 'double wicket' challenge as a tour-opener for the earthquake appeal?

As long as KP doesn't have to bowl against Afridi and Razzaq. :D

That'd be quite cool though thinking about it, Flintoff > Afridi + Razzaq bowling-wise individually but Afridi + Razzaq > Pietersen but then things are all equal for batting.

It's a gimmick and it'll have the conservatives cringing away. :p

And all the figures point to a big resounding no.
How does going at 3.05 an over when bowling on mostly brilliant batting tracks point to a big resounding no? He'll have bowled a lot of overs when the other team is just trying to score quickly to set up a declaration (because Somerset are crap), he'll have hardly ever bowled when there's pressure on the batting team, 3.05 is perfectly reasonable in these situations.

Certainly beats 3.61 an over against Australia, 3.29 against Pakistan or 3.21 against SA that The King of Spain has racked up over the last year or so.
