I think that was Bazball's greatest achievement so far, managing to force a result on that pitch. I seem to remember that they went off early for bad light each day too.
Yep, 100%. That was peak bazball. Getting a result on that wicket was batshit insane.

Every team in history is looking at that wicket on day one and either settling in for a soft drawn, or thinking let's bat and bat and bat and see if this **** of a thing does anything on day 5.

Dead set, day 1 of that Rawalpindi test was the day I started believing that maybe the conventional wisdom surrounding test cricket isn't all that.

England name their team tomorrow and Stokes might not be in it.
Right decision tbh. Him not being an all rounder completely unbalances the side. Albeit we get a worse captain in Pope.

Joe Root should only be bowling in dire circumstances. He was terrible last time and having to shoulder so much responsibility with the ball defs hampered his batting.

At a guess Carse picked as the Stokes backup as the fifth bowler in the event not fit. Perhaps this will be the team

Crawley
Duckett
Pope (C)
Root
Brook
Smith
Carse
Atkinson
Potts
Leach
Bashir

Got to be Carse or Woakes as the only real decision to be made you'd think.

I'd have thought it would be Woakes, Carse and Atkinson, Leach, Bashir
If anything, Stokes’ injury does allow for the additional seamer that would have been left out had he played solely as a batter, although Woakes or Carse at 7 doesn’t fill me with much confidence

You need strong lower order overseas carse or woakes give you that otherwise you guys could have picked tom hartley
We seem to have a lot of #8s in the squad (I’d put Woakes, Carse, Atkinson and perhaps Ahmed in that category as his batting is a bit of an unknown quantity at Test level), it’s theoretically possible (but unlikely I’d say) all of them play, but one of them would have to be a #7, which I wouldn’t feel too confident about. Is it worth picking Ahmed hoping that he’ll be good enough to be a Test level #7 batter regardless of whether he’s a better fit for the team as a spinner? I’m not so sure

Or you could bat Rehan at seven, play Leach and Bashir and your two best seamers. Either way you need your top six to bat well.
At the moment I think Woakes is sort of the acid test of batsmanship, a very good #8 but not quite a #7. He currently averages over 31 in FC cricket, Ahmed in the embryonic stages of his career averages less than 30, it would seem a bit of a punt to me to pick him in the top 7

Ahmed sure looks worthy of #7 still early days but from what i have seen when england tour of india he has technique and temprement to bat in middle order
