***Official*** England in New Zealand series 2013

Looks like England's stock of fast bowlers isn't quite what we've been led to believe. We'd better pray that Anderson and Finn stay fit for the next 12 months. And Finn is barely proven at test level anyway.

Dire figures for Onions in both innings. He's probably played his way out of test cricket for good unless there's a string on injuries.

Is it just the fast bowlers though, if you took the South Africans away from the "English" team, would they still be number 2 at test cricket in the world?

...

FFS, a couple of NZ test players plus a collection of up-and-comers and domestic also-rans did just beat an England side that on paper is only a couple of players shy of full strength!

...

Edit: It doesn't need to be seen in the context of the test series - yes we are still likely to be comprehensively beaten 3-0 there.
Rewind to 96-97?

NZ 'A' won the tour game, but Eng won the test series 2-0, and without an outstanding last wicket stand by Astle and Morrison would have won 3-0.

without the South Africans NZ XI would have been comprehensively beaten

Same as the Samoans from the 'NZ' rugby team?

Really hate this argument. Really hate it.

You've obviously never been to NZ.
Welly born and bred, Mike.

My point was to highlight the folly of that argument. Guys like Prior and Strauss were born in SA but raised in England a la any number of Samoan born players who have represented the ABs. Guys like Pietersen have made a professional choice like one or two Samoan/PI born players down the years. It's exactly the same.

Saying that, I shouldn't have risen to the poster as I know it's a futile, and somewhat emotive, debate!

Yeessss so awesome to see the A side stand up when it's usually thrashed. England still the clear favourites for the real stuff but it's good to see a collection of youngsters and experienced FC cricketers can stand up to a near full strength England side.

Should give this match test status in retrospect imo:ph34r:

Nooo Brownlie :(. This is starting to go downhill.

Pretty impressed this side has stayed with England for 3 and a half days though. I expected a walkover. NZ XI don't have enough wickets left to win against players of this quality but I hope they go for it and lose/draw with respectability.
Taste it ****

Fair enough.

Or the NZ XI just played better than this particular England team.
Ok, so if it had been a full blown competitive game Onions would still have been given that many overs and Swann so few? Somehow I think not. We batted Bell at 8 in the second dig to give others a hit ffs.

On the flipside, in a test match Jeets wouldn't have been allowed to bowl 21 overs for ten million runs either. Gillespie only got so many overs in the first innings because it was a trial also.

The only person getting carried away with this is you. No one here thinks NZ is going to smash England to pieces or whatever you're imagining.

Speaking of Gillespie peeps, I forgot to ask yesterday but I see that despite being horrible whenever I tuned in, and him getting ripped into on here for having no rhythm, he got 4fer in the second innings. Were they random good balls or what?

WTF man? To me, this game changes nothing so for people to now expect NZ to 'give us a hard time' based on this result is reading too much into it. That's all.

I'm not saying you won't give us a hard time but that to think that NZ were initially going to roll over and now believe they're in with a shot based upon this result isn't wise.

Haha I like you Marcuss but you're so butthurt right now. You were in with your initial post before any kiwi had a chance to open their mouths, let alone proclaim great victory over the evil English hordes.

Yeah awesome win. Hope it's not ODI/T20s all over again. Should give them a hard time now that Rossco's in.
Wouldn't get too ahead of yourselves. The small matter of Anderson and Finn to come back in and I think it was pretty obvious from Cook that the seamers were over-bowled. Was very much used as a warm up game otherwise Swann would have taken a lot more overs, from Onions in particular, and we know how well you guys have played spin recently...
Yep, I was in before any Kiwis had a chance to open their mouths.
Apart from the fact the quote I mentioned in the post you just replied to came before my first post :)

Wagner can stick around. The other three are a bit hit and miss.
Course he will, like a perenially fit version of Chris Cairns .

Excellent innings from Wagner by the looks of things. It's a real achievement to beat this England team, even if they don't have a few of their best players.
well done boys!!!!
Rutherford: 90, 33
Watling: 66*, 89*
Brownlie: 63, 17
Wagner: 4/98, 2/56

Decent performances from the guys in the test squad.
bloody hell! Brilliant result

The posts after we won. The only reference to challenging England was a casual one from a single poster, then you launch in with "No we are still Mother England, excuse, excuse, lala I'm not listening."

Like you said, it was a warm up game. England are still favourites and no one debates it. No need to get defensive.
