Hard to argue with those numbers. Should Ishant replace Umesh if he gets fit?

6 this year alone.

Teja is a Sreesanth supporter though so take his words with a pinch of salt

Unlucky not in the Ishant sense where he would just miss the edge, unlucky in the catches dropped sense which is imo actually unlucky.
Shami has been really unlucky too, he comes back and bowls world class as opposed to leaking runs to tail partnerships like Sinus.

The problem with Umesh right now is he has really regressed as a bowler in the last 2-3 years and while we can afford to carry someone if they're not a threat if they build pressure, he does the exact opposite. He usually concedes most of his runs in the worst possible situations.

Sinus is in the worst form of his life right now and he isn't even trying to get better, just seems content to bowl 140 kph for a winning team with no plan and enjoying the success. He and Shami were at similar points 2 years ago, look how much Shami has developed tactically.

Whatever it takes!!!
The other issue about nostrils is that as a bowler his best assets are already provided to this team by Shami. Bhuvi will add a different dimension if the ball is gonna swing and Ishant too, with his height and short of length bowling.

In a heartbeat. Ishant is genuinely test class now and was the best Indian pacer till last year before Shami mkII. I say this as a guy who has fought several traumatic shadow wars against the man here over the last 6 years.

He has 60 wickets @ 31 since 2014, did exceptionally in NZ and SL and won us a test in England.

I am not arguing that Umesh should play ahead of Bhuvi or Ishant.. Just that if those two are not available, he should be next in line.

Lets not forget that Umesh had a bunch of catches put down in the first test. Averages don't mean everything, but Bhuvi is simply the better bowler overall and offers greater variation in terms of skills for the team, that's the reason he should be picked.

Also just on the side, Kohli now ranked #3 in the test rankings AHEAD of Williamson =)

The rankings literally read

1) Smith
2) Root
3) Kohli
4) Williamson

So. Much. Overthinking.

They wanted bits and pieces to replace bits and pieces, he needs little coaching and is familiar with the set-up. Plus be isn't an arsehole. I don't think any of that is supposed to infer anything about Leach/Rayner/Your Preferred Spin Option as a human being. Hell, I've never heard a bad word spoken about Leach (unless "he's not ready" counts as character assassination), and I'm not certain, but I think Dobell is a fan.

At least I go back and quote the original post though and edit my post that way when this happens. You should know, you are the mod. :p

I stopped reading him when he wrote that the ball "Drifted" after pitching and hence Root should not have gone through with the shot. You would expect someone who writes extensively about cricket to know that drift is in the air off the hand and not off the pitch with the revs.

I just don't understand how this makes sense. Almost every possible combination that we might go with for the next test has 5 other bowling options (outside of Dawson). Which means that we, more than any other team, have the luxury to afford a Kerrigan-like performance!

What we desperately need though, is a bowler who can take wickets. The way I see it, right now, our pace bowlers and Moeen have been completely neutralized. Do I think Leach is the man who can turn a game in India? Maybe not, but I think he is far more likely to than Dawson on a turning pitch given that he did this game in and game out for his county last season.
Yes, fair points mate, and I will stress again that the Dawson selection is not the way I would go I am just trying to make sense of it from a selectors perspective and why he has been included. The bottom line is that presumably in the selectors eyes, and I would agree with this, we have no spinner in the country who can go and play against India and be a constant wicket-taking threat. In the case of Leach, and to be fair I haven't seen anywhere near enough of him to judge accurately, if they think he has some real potential but is nowhere near ready, then it's the right move not to select him at this stage. Throwing him in against India could have a real impact on his confidence and self-belief, why do that to him ?
