*Official* England in Bangladesh Thread

Well, a comfortable victory (would probably have been even more comfortable but for a terrible decision by Aleem). What on Earth was all that fuss about with the worry about England losing?
I think people slightly overestimated Bangladesh's attack. England should have been easy favourites chasing 200. Everyone on Sky (from the crowd to the commentators to everyone except Nick Knight) seemed to be talking as if England's hopes were slowly draining away last evening. Mushfiqur missed a trick, for me, in not attacking the new-ball. Harmison bowled terribly there and got away with it. A few more cut-shots and the lead might have been closer to 200 than it was.
We can't underestimate the potential importance of that decision against Javed, either.

My Views

The Bowling is Poor apart from the two seamers, Harmison and Hoggard are excellent bowlers who also need support from Batty, Giles and Clarke who took 4 wickets between them.

Batty bowled ok but i dont think he is a test match spinner and Clarke is average player but i think we need to give these two more chances.

Ashley Giles has had more Chances then i can remember, If he is our Premier spinner then we will never bowl teams out with spin like other teams have in the past ( Marc will be going on about his Ecom Rate AGAIN) but 65 wickets@ 42.61 is poor for a front line bowler

But sadly apart from Batty there is no spinner to turn too

IMO Knight was a quality ODI batsman who couldnt make it in the Tests, even though he had the talent.
I don't think he had the talent for Tests - he never always knew where his off-stump was, and that was so fatal.
He had some of the talent in abundance, but not all of it.

Richard , this isnt really related to the Bangladesh series but I was wondering what are you're opinioms on David Sales , I recall watching him bat when I was in England a few years back & he looked a million dollars , I know he was called up for England A , then got injured playing Volleyball.

Do you reckon he could possibly have something to offer at test level?

Possibly, but ATM there is no need as we have a settled middle-order and the derided Flintoff to come back.

Is that a measured comment about a Worcester player? Wow..

Pretty much sums it up actually. Sales has done little since that big year and is highly unlikely to get a shot with England. Croft will play before the winter's out.

CROFT!!!!!
If you need someone to drop it short outside the off stump ... he's your man! Still, he prob'ly better than the dross we've seen so far, and he did out bowl Giles on the last tour to Sri Lanka.

He'd have played much more hadn't he made the foolish error of chickening out of that India tour he was selected for ... yeah ... very dangerous :wow::rolleyes:

What has happened to Giles incidently? He was never a great bowler ... but he just looks ***** these days. I guess there's no point bowling a leg stump line at Bangledesh batsmen.

I heard a rumor that Matt Bulbeck from Somerset has retired , but he's only 24???

Can anyone verify if thats true or just b**ls**t??

It's true, I think I'm right in saying it's because of injury but Anna will be better placed to explain more. ;)

Look, there are some (like Hick, Knight and Fairbrother) who are good enough for First-Class county-cricket but not for Tests.
The point is, they're in a minority, they're not, as some suggst, examples of a trend.

The thing is: why is he bowling a leg-stump line? I can't imagine he, or any coach, is stupid enough to believe that's a good line? All I can think, as I recently mentioned, is that the change in angle has created problems in his aim.
As for Croft; constantly drop it short outside off? He doesn't. Honestly. He mightn't be the greatest spinner, even the best fingerspinner, but he's nothing if not accurate. A Test economy-rate of under 2.4-an-over. As for the India tour, Caddick got a very prompt, and totally justifiable, recall. Croft is very unfortunate if he has been penalised for his withdrawl.
